The windshield wipers on my 88 Bronco go crazy after a few minutes of running, either on delay mode, or in single speed mode. They stop at various positions on the windshield, and I get a buzzing sound from around the wiper switch. I have pulled the delay module out and "looked" at it. I checked the ground, which is okay. The delay module is about $120, and the switch is about $55. My questions are, what is the most common failure? And, can I just put the non-delay wiper switch in place of the delay wiper switch (removing the delay module)? Any help? THANKS!
I would try locating a replacement from a salvage yard first. Not sure if the no-delay switch would be a plug and play, but I'm sure your could swap it over. May have to do a little wiring modification and plug replacement. I'm sure someone else who has had this problem will be along shortly.
I had the same problem with my 88. I fixed it by replacing the wiper motor. The replacement was a rebuild. I did not notice until I had it all back together that the new one is very loud. It is too much trouble to pull it back out. Be sure to test it before you put another one in. Mine did not buzz though. It did stop for no apparent reason at different times.
Thanks for the posts, so far. I hadn't thought about the motor as a problem. I can wiggle the switch and get it to start moving again, which lead me to believe that it was a switch or controler problem.
If they stop at odd points the "park" contacts in the motor may be corroded or damaged causing them to stop intermittantly. Normally the park contacts release the power to the motor when the gearhead reaches a certain point in its travel so the wipers always stop when they are fully down. If they are damaged or corroded they may be causing the motor to lose power at different positions during the travel of the gearing. Unfortunately, jem270's comment about replacing the motor is about the only solution unless you really feel you have the technical know-how to dismantle the gearhead and repair the contacts inside it.
You guys did good. Thanks for the advise. I am ordering a new motor and will update you after it is installed. With all of this good help I have recieved, maybe it's time for ME to become a SUPPORTER!
Had the same problem on my 86, wipers would stop at different spots on the windshield, replaced the motor at $90 only to find it still did the same thing. Problem was the delay modual, replaced and works fine now. Stealers wanted $220 Canadian, got one from the wrecker for $10, all these black boxes are the same from the 70s to late 80s wires are longer on some only difference.
the module on my 88 is mounted just under the headlight switch, behind the dash (of course). I haven't had enough time to try out the repairs for mine, yet.
Where would that delay module be on my 87 Bronco ?
Having the same kind of problem
The module is mounted right behind the headlight switch and is secured with a self tapping screw, on the 86 and older they are just zip tied to the wiring harness, a whole lot easier to get out than that screw !
