I usually set the crank at about 15deg advanced according to the pointer when I put the dist in that seems to give it a better chance of firing right up. It will actually fire before that point just a slight amount, typing it isn't getting it across clearly but thats what I do.
I do the same thing. Put the dist. in with the rotor pointing at the #1 plugwire and the timing pointer on about 10-12 BTDC on the balancer. The engine should fire right up without turning the dist.
I think the reason this workes so well is that the Dist and cam gears are curved and if you try to put the distrib in with the crank at TDC and the rotor pointing at the #1 plugwire the roter will turn and it will be about 10 degreas retarded. This is a great tip to help get that new moter started the first time it's cranked. I find this to be a great reliever of stress

thanks, i put the dist in before the motor was in the truck, but when i went to take it off the stand i noticed the balancer was a degree or 2 BTC so pulled it out and realinged to TDC, the motor is now in the truck but shouldnt be to bad, ill just have to turn it over a few times to figure out when the compression stroke on number 1 is, and then drop it back in at 10- 12 degrees .
i forgot to mention that i have the edelbrock roller timing gear set, and performer plus cam, even with those goodies the recomendations above still applie?
