block heater and coolant temps by hour

This morning I plugged the block heater in. My Scangauge read 39 degrees.

1 hour later it was 80 degrees.

2 hours later was 94 degrees.

3 hours later it was 103 degrees.

4 hours later it was 110 degrees.

5 hours later it was 116 degrees.

Yes, 39 isn't that cold to start, but was interesting to see that it went from 39 to 80 in an hour.

Currently my oil temp in hour 3 is 77 degrees. It was 40 at starting point.

Oil temp after 4 hours was 91 degrees.

plugging it in

if your using 5w40 syn and get it up to 80 after only i hour.save energy and only warm it for 1 hour.that's at least a 1000 watt heater so a lot of juice would be saved and she'd fire right up.my02

Good info there amdriven. I had no ides they heated up that quickly and many times left my truck plugged in all night. It's true, they don't necessarily need to be heated to start, but I do it to reduce wear and tear on the engine. Mine has fired w/o heating in temps as low as -30F. Good post.

I decided to plug in again last night. Of course it started out a little warmer, but wanted to see how hot it got.

Well, after 6 hours and starting around 60 degees, I got in and saw that my ECT was 127 degrees, and my EOT was 109 degrees.

Then I thought, "will it stay there after starting?" Nope. After start up my ECT went to 110 degrees and my EOT went to 93 degrees.

Grabbed my Temp gun and and took a reading on the block, driverside, and it showed 93 degrees also.

Just some more useless info! Just kidding.

Why did I have my temp gun near by? Well, I have read a couple different people mention that the "heated mirrors" either cycle on and off or are only on for 20 minutes, or only come on below 32 degrees. (I know they don't) So, I took temp readings all the way to work 20 miles 40 degrees out. They stayed at 70 degrees all the way. (Took readings every 5 miles)

Not long ago, my boss told me I needed a hobby, so, I bought a Ford 6.0L
