Fellers,
Truck will not idle anymore even with the headlights on (recently I posted about truck dying with headlights off). Even with the headlights on now the truck dies at idle, under acceleration it runs awesome, no loss of power. I cannot understand, I had the voltage regulator checked and is pushing 14.4 volts to the battery, I unplugged the IAC and had the same problem just at a lower rpm. I replaced the ignition module not too long ago (like 300 miles). I'm dying here!!!
I have a 97 F-350 4X4 460 auto that when the headlights were turned on the engine died . What I found was a loose ground on the right inner fender by the solonoid . On my 97 there is a green ground stud that screws into fender that was loose . I tightened the stud & the problem went away . Hope this helps & good luck .......
what is the ground for? this sounds like it might make sense because it is a slowly degrading problem as in it is getting looser and looser. sometimes the problem is worse than others. What I would love to know is what was the ground for? was it on the solenoid?
bwana584, hey man did your truck run at all with the head lights on? or would it just not idle? My truck runs when I am on the gas right now it just will not idle.
I'll let you know from personal experience that One of my trucks had that issue.. you could accelerate and it would run great. i mean no prob at all. the problem was when you coasted or jsut plain stopped and let it idle.. it would immediately die... now my theory on the issue was nothing to do with the headlights. In my case i found a Vaccumn line that had come loose as a result whenever the engine idled it didn't get enough air and thus it died.. After i put hte hose back in it never did it again... i may be totally off since i have worked more on dodge trucks then anything else. but im hoping this might help
I was just assuming that it might have had something to do with the headlights, I drove it home last night and back to work this morning with no problem. I don't get it, it acts like it is a vacuum problem though duceswild so I will certainly check again. I completely cleaned the engine compartment yesterday after this weekends all night mud ride. Purple power to the rescue!
89 1/2 Ton it's been several years since I had the headlight issue with my truck so I had to look to see what grounds to that stud . It's located on the right inner fender by the battery . It looks to ground the battery & the lights . Your problem might be different . On my 97 the engine would just die when the lights were turned on . In effect it was like a kill switch . Duceswild might be on the right track with the vac issue . Sorry I can't be of more help .........
do u regurly go muddin if so you may have got a little water in the throttle body and you need to clean it and chage the air filter i had this problem with my muddin truck and that did the trick
redneck I spent about 4 hours rolling trails and water the night before this dying problem started, actually i dove headfirst in a headlight deep hole as I was coming out of the woods and it kinda started happening then and it has slowly been going away. It was acting like some water got sucked in through the intake. The truck will idle now but the headlights still kill the truck! the water theory doesnt make much sense when you consider that the motor would pop off just fine, just wouldnt idle.
ya then your air filter got wet and water probaly got in the throttle it happend to me and i had to change filter and then first time cleaned it then next time i let it go and it healed on its own well hope it gits better
if you have created a bad connection during the mud trip, i can see it shutting off at idle due to a bad connection.
however, the ford light wireing sucks.
look into the article on rewireing the ford light setup for less power drain.
i have a deep cycle battery, and i can still dim the lights.
man I'm telling you, you're saying you altered the wiring and you can still dim the lights with a deep cycle battery? Holy moly, I know it has to be an electrical/wiring problem somewhere. If I really got in there and traced all the wires around I could probably get some kind of idea as to how the headlights have anything to do with the ignition. But Bwana definately is probably on the right track if he had an issue with the lights and the motor shutting off. I will start at the solenoid and trace the grounds around.
