I have a 2000 7.3 4x4 excursion and I am trying to find out if I am suppose to tow in overdrive. I was towing a 5000 lb boat and trailer, going though the hills of NC, SC, and GA.(I-85) It just seemed like the transmission was shifting too much. Should I tow in overdrive? I read in my owners manuel to not use the cruise control while towing but not much about overdrive.
I was told not to tow in overdrive using my bronco but I figure that the excursion should not have any problems towing in overdrive.
Do must of you that have had transmission failures tow in overdrive?
I know I have seen plenty of F250 towing 25' plus trailers going 70mph with what seemed like no problems.
I really don't want to have any transmission problems and I plan on adding a trans cooler. And the valve mod that I was reading about up here.
It just seems like the trans is somewhat sloppy even during normal driving.
Your trans might break anyways because it might have the diode in it. However, in either case, why bother? The trans can support you towing in OD. However, if it is hunting a lot, drop it out of OD with the button.
I find whether or not I use overdrive for towing is how the vehicle actually responds to the combination of weight and terrain. With my 12x7 dual axle box trailer in the hills of western MD, OD is usually OK. When"m towing the 38' French Fry Trailer, however, the hills cause too much shifting for my taste. On the flats it's a no brainer.
BTW, I have a 2003 Ex LTD, 7.3PSD with 200K+, no transmission trouble, (knock on woodgrain), and tow infrequently. It's just a matter of adjusting things so the truck tows effectively.
I asked BTS about the stock trans towing in OD and his reply was "Why not?" As to what he said about his trans towing in OD, it was a simple dismissal. Since he is warrantying the trans, if he had any doubts, he'd have said so.
