The engine is a 460, and the tranny slips a little on take-off and around turns--it's more pronounced when the vehicle is cold. The fluid level is fine. Are there some possible adjustments, or does this sound like a candidate for a rebuild?
Also, is this a C6 tranny? It's a friend's vehicle, so I can't just run out and look at it and all I remember is that it was a 'G' tranny code on the door sticker, but I didn't look underneath, nor pay attention to how many times it upshifted when I was a passenger. IIRC, the shift pattern is PRND21.
Slipping on turns or acceleration sounds like the fluid is sloshing to the side or rear and the pump is picking up some air. I would check the screen mounting to the valve body in the pan. If it is not bolted up properly air could leak above it. Do recheck the fluid level as that is the most likely problem.
Thanks, rclarke. There's definitely enough fluid in it, if anything, it was slightly overfilled (probably because it was slipping someone added some tranny fluid as a first remedy and added too much). I suppose a fluid/filter change couldn't hurt, then if the pickup/screen is out of whack, that could be fixed, too.
It may just be that the tranny needs a rebuild, too--it is an '87, and has at least rolled the odo once, I'm guessing more like twice--it was a church bus, and I could see 10k miles/year, I don't imagine it saw 15k/year, which would be 300k total.
