I am working on a 2000 F450 with the PSD and a ZF 6spd. The Input shaft, and sleave for the release bearing got chewed up by an exploding release bearing and I get the joy of working on it. I have had several ZF 5spd apart but the 6spd looks like it has a centre section . Can anybody on here help me out with the dissassemble, One of my friends said I have to take off the rerar section first. I only want to change the input shaft and I don't want to dissassemble any more than absolutely necesary.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Your friend is correct ,everything comes out through the rear.
You really need a manual for this because the there are some special tools required to get it apart. Some special detent spring removal tools otherwise they will be destroyed while trying to lift the mainshaft and counter shaft out.
When you change the input shaft it effects the main shaft clearance. So you will need to set the end play clearances up after replacing the shaft.

Thanks FortyFords, I started moving the dowels in the housing and the rear section moved away from the centre and I am going no further. The dayshift can worry about it. I am recommending the trans go to Ford dealer or tranny shop. I am wondering why they even wanted us to take it apart. We are a Hino truck dealer and this customer has several Hinos so they told him sure we can fix it. Hey we were slow tonight anyway.
I guess we'll have to leave a note about my broken "magic wand" .
We should have stopped at the beer store on the way to work!!!!!!!
just an update on this problem: There is a sleave and updated pilot bearing for this trans, I think it also works on ZF 5spd too. A local tranny rebuilder brought it in for us. Made by TECKPAK FITZALL USA Part no.PBZ3HD .
I wondered about longevity but they swear by them. The trans works fine.
hope this might help somebody in the future.
They actually sent a guy over and installed the sleave with a 3lb hammer, no driver or anything, then I carefull removed the rear section, and removed the 3 bolts holding the centre section, moved it about 1/4 inch away and clean the surfaces with break clean and put in gasket maker (very difficult into a small gap). Tightened the 3bolts, reinstalled the rear section with a film of gasket maker and bolted it all back together. It was interesting modifying my clutch line up tool to fit the new pilot bearing but it worked, installed flywheel/clutch/trans/etc. Today dayshift finished it (fill trans and install shifter/roadtest)
She works mint.
As an experienced mechanic I do not like the sleave installation procedure, but it sure could save a lot of time. Too bad the Service manager didn't tell me about it until I had already started to tear trans apart.
The release bearing did not seem like it was heavy enough for the task at hand but I guess it lasted 210,000km of hard use. Thats just my observations.
Thanks for all the help guys! Cheers.
