Im trying to justify getting a roof rack on my shell. Reason being, I want a safari basket with some flood lights on the back to help me out when I need some lights around back. Its be a Thule Trakker II roof rack system and the MOAB basket with extention. Probably some KC lights, Ill have to look them up. The argument my fiance gives me is that she doesnt like it, I value her input and I dont want her to not like the truck ya know? My dad says he thinks Ill forget about it and take it off on something low one day, which I dunno about. And he thinks its just too much for the truck. I like the thing and the way it looks. I think itd finish off the top. Not to mention what I could throw up there on long trips.
Heres a pic from the leer poster with that one on there.
Here is mine, not quite as tall but close enough.
So what do you guys think, would it be overkill?
I think you'll almost never use it, but I've been considering the same thing. I'm in the market for a Leer and asked the place I'd order from about the basket, for the same reasons you're considering. I think it looks d*mn skippy though, and from time to time might use the lights.
you only live once...get what you want and if you think youll need it...JUST DONT LET OTHER PEOPLE TALK YOU OUT OF IT!!! especially a woman...lol...would she NOT buy a pair of shoes because you dont like the way they look...NO!!!...so go buy the roof rack and call it a day
Go for what makes you happy! If you let other people tell you what looks good on your truck then it's not really your truck is it!. My wife didn't want me to lift mine but I like the lifted look and it's my truck. Now she loves my truck and trys to take it whenever she can.
If you mainly want it for light mount, I'd check out the product from White Night. I've had their backup lights on my last two trucks (dual 55W) and there is a manual switch to turn them on when you're working behind your truck and need extra light.
I'm afraid I'd try to use the basket too much and crack my fiberglass shell!
why don't you just get the bars on top and just use the basket when needed?
you can always use the bars for attaching ladders and such on a regular basis
just my 2 cents
KitsKid<= just loves threads that want MY opinion, LOL. I like the idea, "if someone else tells you it don't look good, don't get it, then it aint your truck". If you want it get it. Don't make any difference if anyone else likes it or not. (personally, I don't even like a camper shell) but that's my opinion. I got a buddy that buys one everytime he buys a new truck, has for 20+ years. But that's him not me. I like to be able to walk up to my truck and throw any dang thing I want too in the bed. Or get anything out that I want too. But that's my Opinion.
My workplace wanted me to put on on when I ordered the top but at the time I thought it would be stupid, but now that Ive seen it on one or two of them, theyve grown on me.
I thought about a roof rack and played with different ideas and different designs and in the end I decided for the better that I would NEVER use that rack enough to justify the work and cost to put it together other than maybe liking the looks of it. I think your idea is in the same category as mine was. The only nagging question now is how obsessed you are with getting it. If you think logically, you must ask yourself how much will this cost and judging from your useage now, how much and how often will you acually NEED or USE this rack. It isn't easy, but not rocket science either. If the itch is too much, your're gonna scratch. So how bad is your itch?
Personally, I like the basket rack. Nice look, but I wouldn't really ues it, so I need to put the money elsewhere.
Well, the thing is, cost is nothing. Work pays for it all, so the question that really remains is that, do I really want to risk screwing up a $2400 shell?
I would get it if you want it, if you like it thats what matters, It's not the wifes truck (yet) right? lol I wouldn't worry about screwing up the topper just take your time and measure, measure, measure
