I have decided to replace the sending unit for fuel guage myself. Has anybody removed the tank and done this. Just wondering how difficult it will be. Any help would be great. VHolt. 00 x V10. 118,000 miles and counting
My guage reads full all the time. The miles to empty on the lie-o-meter jumps between 450 and 550 depending on the day. I'ts been this way about a month. Took it to the stealer and they wanted $380.00 for repair. Looking at the truck, it looked like when you remove the skid plate and disconnect the filler tube and vent it should drop down. I quess I'll find out. VHolt 00x V10
The skid plate takes a 13mm socket (4 bolts) and the tank straps takes a 10 mm (7 bolts). Also slip off the fuel filler and vent tubes behind the fuel fillup door. Each has a screw clamp.
Lower to the floor, it helps if the tank is empty
There is a vent slide on tube up by the fuel filler tube.
slide out the left rear wheel well, if you have a 4x4 then you might not need to take the left rear tire off but if you don't you will have to.
Sending unit is in a 6" hole in the center of the tank. You need a strap wrench to lossen but mark the position before removing to know how tight to make it when you put it back togehter
Work away on the challenge at hand
reverse the process. . .
You can check out Harpooning the tank in the diesel section for more detailed instructions as well.
Hello, Well I droped the gas tank today it was pretty easy. The question I have now is how do you remove the fuel pump/sending unit it seems to be attached to the bottom of the tank. Also is their a sending unit to replace or do I have to replace the entire pump unit with the float control. Thank You Mike
It should just pull out the top. Is the SS plate stuck to the rubber gasket under it? It isn't mounted to the interior of the tank so you might need to pry it up after you take the retaining ring off. All there is in there is the pickup tubes and a float for the fuel level monitor.
Well I took the tank off yesterday. thanks Lonewolftx and RACERX7775 for the link and advice. Pretty easy really. My sending unit was not bad, the float had hung on a wire in the up position. Thanks again for the help. VHolt 00x V10
No real interest on my part to cut a hole in my truck bed to access the fuel tank. It is only a few bolts and the filler hole for access to the whole thing and w/o fuel in it, it is easy to get off.
Wjhy cut a hole in your truck bed? How many times do you want to access the fuel tank top anyway?
I think it would be a better option for the Excursion, especially mine, since I had to cross thread one of the bolts back in and the shroud is very, very heavy.
