i rolled my bronco back in january and its sat ever since. I finally tried to get it going this weekend and the motor is locked up. I have removed all the plugs and belt and the motor still will not turn over. tried a breaker bar on the crank and still nothing. ive sprayed some liquid wrench down some of the cylinders hoping to losen the rings up so not sure how long that needs to sit before really working well.
I'd also drop some oil down the cylinders just for the lubrication. Go easy on the breaker bar, if something isn't right inside that motor forcing it with the breaker bar could make it much worse.
Don't throw oil in there - it doesn't penetrate worth a damn. Try either ATF or diesel fuel. I've got an uncle who has been pulling wrenches for 40+ years and he swears by diesel to un-seize an engine. I find ATF to be as effective.
Does the engine rock backwards? I have used brake fliud to unstick engines. What ever you use, let it sit a few days then rack the engine forward and backwards, a little each day and see if it comes loose.
I second the ATF, it also works good to loosen stuck piston rings and break up carbon in the cylinders.
My dad used to flat rate engines like back in the day, cars would roll up sounding like they had a loose rod and he would pour a bunch of atf doun the carb, not too much as you can flood it out. and it would clear up real good.
It's also a good trick if you have a mosqito problem.
I'd only dump about a cup of ATF down each hole. More than that and if the piston is at the top it will just run back out. You just need enough to cover the top of the piston so it will work all the way around.
I saw a piston pressed out of an inline 4 cylinder engine that required 18 tons of force before she broke free. Of course there had been water sitting in that cylinder for about 3 years.
I was talking about rocking the engine not the whole truck, using a wrench on the engine to rock it one way and then back the other. I have used brake fliud to loosen stuck engines, because if you have ever dropped any on your paint you know it eats it pretty fast.
well i figured out finally what has kept the motor from turning. I am in the middle of tearing down the 88 bronco and swapping over an 85 body. i decided to also tear into the motor at this time to figure out why its misbehaving and found the rear port on the lower intake full of oil. supprised this hasnt seeped back down since its been sitting for well over a year. you can find progress here http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/4158/56728 and a pic of the full manifold.
