Disc Brake Conversion??

This may be a Question that has been beat to death on here, but I am new to your Forum, which was suggested to me by a guy on the Rodders Round Table.
I am wanting to put disc brakes on the front of my '65 F-100.I am wondering if any of the Ford systems from a newer truck will bolt on.I dont know if this is a purist message board, but I have a 355 Chevy in mine too,so some of you may not even want to answer me.

Sean, you are right on, the question has been around many times. You just have to start reading the archives and it wont take long to run into one. As for the other, I relate this to homosexuality there was absolutly no good reason for you, a first time poster, to come here and announce that you had *******ised your fine truck by putting that piece of crap motor in it. There are somethings better left unsaid. If after you find your answers for your brake upgrade, you want to withdraw your user ID, I'm sure no one would be offended.

Have you ever heard that "Honesty is the best Policy"? I mentioned the 355 up front because one of you would have eventually asked what was powering it.Have you tried to find performance parts for a 352 without a $100,000 a year job?
I built that SB chevy to run twice as hard for a third of what that 352 would have cost.I can see that upfront honesty is not respected on this site,so I will stick with the Rodder sites.
People who leave replys like yours are ignored on the RRT,and rightly so.

LAST EDITED ON 28-Mar-01 AT 07:46 PM (EST)[p]Sean, dont get too discouraged here. When you come to a Ford site throwing around that "C" word your gonna get some flack. Heck, go to a Chevy board and ask them how to put a 289 Ford motor in a Vette and see what kind of responses you get! John (you know him is the authority on just the conversion you are asking about, he's done it several times. Let him cool off a little. In the mean time, this is a great site with a great bunch of people with a wealth of knowledge about Ford trucks. Hang around a while and maybe you'll understand why the cheaper way aint always the best.

Any performance parts for a 360, 390, 406, 427, & the venerable 428 would have worked.....You just need to dig around a little more, and you come up smelling like a rose.

as far as the disk brakes, go to the tech section and read the article there. It is an easy swap using the parts from a 65-79 F100 (or F150). Everything will bolt onto your frame. When you get the parts from the donor, get the power steering box too. You may have problems with your Chebby power steering pump not having the same pressure as the Ford. Street rod companies have regulators to solve the problem. Maybe that minor obstacle would be incentive to install a 351 between those framerails. As far as the SBC being cheaper, the price of crate motors from Ford and GM are the same.

Gee, That's how I go about my projects also. Put a 400 horsepower engine in something and THEN worry about how I'm gonna stop the thing.....talk about screwed up priorities.

Then again there are those that put as loud an exhaust system as humanly possible on their vehicles and then wonder ow they can quieten down the inside of it so that they can hear themselves think.

Disc Brake Conversion??

I have owned several Fords in the past, including a Mustang GT,a Unibody, and a 66 Comet.I have no animosity towards Fords, but I dont have a preference for them either. Here in Mid Missouri, the vast majority of Rodders use SB Chevys for motivation.I bought the old Ford because I like the body style much better than Mid 60's Chevys. Also,my uncle bought it new
so there is some family type value to it.
As for going about this backwards,I never had a problem stopping the old truck with the 352 in it.The difference between a worn out motor and a 400 horse mill (of any kind) became readily apparent trying to shut it down after eating a new Camaro alive between lights.I didn't realise the brakes weren't up to the task until after the fact.
Also, the fact remains that Ford and Mopar motors cost a lot of money to build.I am a Rodder, not a purist, and with three kids the cheaper way is the right way.

Disc Brake Conversion??

Sean,

The way I always looked at the cost delta between ford fe and c**** sb was that c****'s needs all the aftermarket help they can get. I have one of those 100k jobs and I find it expensive to build an fe. Damn fun when it is done though.

I have a 66 f100 and have done the disc conversion and it was cake. Basically I bought the I beams and spindles off a 73 f100 and then bought everything else new and installed it. Might as well do the bushings while you are at it. Why go through the effort/labor then put old parts on. I would make sure that I got the tie rods and ends for the correct year spindles for the conversion also. The original tie rods do not fit the disc spindles. Please do not grind the spindle arm down as the tech articles states.

Disc Brake Conversion??

I've just finished new suspension/disk brake conversion.

For Brakes I bought '76 IBeams, Spindles, rotors and backing plates. I turned the rotors, added new bearings and seals and replaced all bushings, drag link and tie-rod ends. I bought a new booster, master cylinder and P. valve from Power Master Brakes. (Great Company). Did the rears too.

For Power, last week I installed a pro built 351C with Isky rv cam, Manley s.s. valves, 3 angle valve job, 9.5 Comp Hyper**** composite pistons, Edelbrock Performer with a Carter 625cfm carb. A stock Ford electronic ignition system fires fine but I might change soon. Man she runs fine.

I had the C-6 rebuilt at the same time with h.d. clutches and torque converter and shift kit too.

Now my wife wants me to sell my 99% perfect red and white shortbed! And it's only got 400 miles since a ground up restore!

Oh well, we'll see who wins this battle. Any questions, write ksshowcase(No Email Addresses In Posts!)

I was reading through and I wanted to know if you had ideas on how to convert the 65-66 F-100 4x4 early front end to disk? Can you help me on this?

Sean;
You do have some company using GM motors in our pickups. About 4 years ago I took in the 'F100 Western Nationals' in Laughlin, NV that spring. Virtually all of the Ford pickups were from the fat fender era and had GM engines; it was quite a shock. But many of the entrants were from CA or NV and I guess alot of them do that. Most of the trucks were slightly modified but several were strictly restored; those kept their original power plants. On the other hand, it wasn't much of a show as there were even Chrysler cars on display.
