This has probably been brought up before but I cant seem to find any arguments on it. Anyway, does anyone have any problems Using the Coastal Mercon Fluid? It was $7.98 a gallon at AutoZone. Is this comparable with Motorcraft and Castrol?
Generally, if it passed the spec, then it passed the spec. I guess it ends up a question as to how much you trust Coastal.
Personally, I have no knowledge of any problems with that product, but then any problems with a trans fluid could take a long time to surface. One always has to question the cheaper product, but today, so much is marketing that its hard to tell if you really get more by paying more.
it does meet the mercon spec and will not harm a thing. but at 1.99 a quart its a little steeeep. The supertech brand from walmart has a better basestock and add pack for 1.68 a quart
I'm sure it is ok, no one wants to be in the situation Quaker State was in back in the
70's it cost them a bunch of money as well as loyal customers when they sold a bad product.
Do NOT use Coastal if you have a transmission that calls for Mercon V. It's not the same. Eventhough the bottle claims "for use in all mercon required transmissions". Mercon V has an additive that Dexron/Mercon does not and is vital to proper trans. function and longevity.
I snooped around quite a bit on this forum and in general and discovered our 02 explorer trans NEEDS the Mercon V. Anything else will cause it to fail very premature (not that it's not already prone to failure as it is)
