They were already in China. The fact of the matter once they are already in there with infrastructure in place and employees its not as simple as you make it out to be.
They basically had two choices:
1. Comply and continue to operate.
2. Don't comply, the government takes it anyway, and then takes over the operation.
Either way, the Chinese government gets the information. This world isn't black and white, there are many shades of grey, though you wouldn't know that if you stepped into some USA churches.
I'm a "Yahoo" man myself...... -snip- I got turned off by those self-serving, hypocritical horses-asses and refuse to give them one more dime to add to their personal coffers.
Yahoo and Microsoft both engage in this sort of information as well, and censor their search engines in China just as Google does. Remember the journalist jailed for 10 years in China thanks to Yahoo's help last year?
How black and white are things now that you're gonna have to make the choice whether or not to use the Internet's search engines? I'm willing to bet things will turn grey and you'll keep using them.
Most of the smaller search engines worth anything buy their search data from the big players so you can't use them either (this includes Dogpile).
As long as I can get what I need I will continue to use whatever search engine will give it to me.
I actually find it fun to browse some of the "Match" pages that aren't what I am looking for. Makes me look at stuff that I otherwise would have not looked at. I rarely sit down with a short time frame on an internet search because god only knows what will pop up or how long it will take.
I did google "Failure" as PB sugested and got the GWB bio page from the whitehouse. Correct me if I am wrong Ken but when the search engines determine which items to list first it is based on how many times that particular link was clicked through that search right? or something like that. So if we typed Ford into google the Ford.com website pops up but I am sure somewhere down in the results is FTE so theoretically if we clicked on FTE gazillions of times we could get it ranked abouve ford.com on the list right?

OK...great....they were already there, so while in Rome, do like the Romans....you conveniently left out the part where they refused to help the FBI with tracking pedophiles because they are "oh, so worried" about the privacy of their users......
Is Microsoft and Google helping the feds with this situation?........
I'm gonna try out dogpile for a bit and see how useful they are......

Search engines can be gamed quite easily. Have 50,000 web sites hosted by democrats linked to the whitehouse page with the anchor text "failure" and Google will rank it high for that keyword. Its not based on click-through data (that's just one small factor). But if it were, similar tricks could be used to push up a keyword for a particular page.

No I didn't leave anything out. If the Feds want a company's data they should get a warrant for it. How would you feel if the feds asked your pastor to turn over counceling records so they could determine who the pedophiles, wife beaters, law-breakers and drunks are in your church (and I'm sure there are plenty)? Would your pastor turn it over without a warrant?
The difference between the US asking for it and the Chinese demanding it is the difference between being asked to hand over your wallet, and being forced to hand it over at gun point.

Dogpile uses Google, Yahoo and Microsoft feeds. Pretty much every smaller engine buys their search data from the big three (or from Yahoo's smaller Inktomi search division). Don't use Ask either, since they make their income through Google. Basically, you've got no where to go except the worthless 3rd tier search engines.
Sorry, I did not mean to start political arguments...
Ken is right about those third tier search engines. I can recognize some of the feeds after just seeing them on Gaggle...
I have used Google as my primary search engine for sooo long it just makes me cry when it does not work well anymore.
EDIT- Got to run out and get another mouse, they tell me this one is out of warranty, but I could have sworn it was a lifetime warranty, Oh well without the original box and packaging I can't argue and it has served me well for a number of years.

I thought I was the only one that noticed Google was getting less useful...
I work on other peoples' computers pretty often and use Google to chase down drivers, tech advice, and whatever else. I'd noticed, I think over the last couple months, that I got more commercial and garbage results, than real ones...but decided maybe it was just me. Not like I'm searching for something normal.
I dont like google or yahoo search, they just frustrate me...so i try to stay away from them unless i absolutly have to use them. Infact i try to stay away from all websites except for my e-mail and here.
