I am asking this for my father in law. He has a 2001 F-250 with 7.3 and automatic transmission. Today after towing his 8000 lbs. TT he backed it down the driveway and shut off the truck and unhooked the camper and got back in to drive off and he put it into drive and there is nothing there it will just rev up. Reverse works fine, and 1 works fine, but no 2 gear or drive. Anyone have a suggestion of what might be wrong. Could this be the mechanical diode? Could it be something electrical with the PCM? Any help is greatly appreciated.
hmmm, if I recall reverse utilizes the low clutch and drive clutch together, so I would guess the drive clutch is smoked. I'm sure some of the tranny gurus around here will chime in for you, but I wouldn't think it was computer related.
KBeefy is right I believe and the reason that I am getting a new trans the end of the month. For me it is reverse that I am losing according to Brian at BTS using the low gears to control speed down steep grades burns up the clutches in those curcuits.
Unfortunately Ford didn't build this tranny very good and the curcuit for low gears uses 25 psi and 6 plates, this doesn't hold the clutches together enough.
Brian said he had guys contact him that didn't have reverse at all after towing so I consider myself lucky that it only slips if I have to give it gas while backing up.
