Smile Oil?

How's everyone doing?

My first time posting on here and have a question.

I just bought a new 2006, f 350 ,6.0 ,PSD, 4x4.

I have 2000 miles on it now and the dealer is going to do the first oil change for me. But after that what tpe of oil should i start looking for, synthetic or not, weight and so on.

Never owned a diesel before so i am new to this!!!!

I'm going to be hauling a horse trailer maybe once or twice a week, other then that just driving to work and back. And by the way i live in florida if that make a difference.

Thank for any advice, I have no idea where to start, just want to make sure i use what is best for it, going to keep this one for a long time, at least i hope for what they cost!!!

shell rotella is ruling majority of the people out there. as long as it is for diesel engines you are ok. then it just matters on your pocket. some oils can get expensive.

a full PAO or ester 5w40 CI4+ or CJ is the only oil that should be used in the lower 48 in these 6L's with all the turbo issues and the injector system oil shearing and thinning issues...also reduces engine start load and starter issues
don't go cheap on a $12,000 engine and a $50,000 truck

I would use a good quality dino oil that is rated as a diesel oil with API certification of CI4+. Motorcraft dino oil (15W-50) is a good choice for low mileage/new trucks. I used for 50,000 miles with great results.

However, I would switch to synthetic oil (Rotella-Syn 5W-40) earlier than I did (it took me a while to understand the benefits of synth).

I do plan on swithcing to the new CJ4 oil spec as soon as it comes available. It is being reported in some of the diesel magazines that this "low ash" oil is really better than the existing CI4+ spec that is currently what we are all running.

Any CI4+ or CJ4 (new) oil is fine and either choose either dino or synthetic on your personal beliefs of what you expect from an oil.

Like i said i'm new to this diesel thing, so what is this CI4+ or CJ4. (sorry)

Sounds like i should not think about snythetic yet? Depends on the price differnet anyway. I had a 2000 f150 5.4l before this new one and i changed the oil every 3000 miles no matter what. On these PSD do you recommend 3000 or 5000 miles???

Thanks

5000 seems to be the number recommended, in the first 5k though once at 2k and the other at 5k has been recommended. when you look at a bottle of oil, it should have two concentric circles on it with some writing in them. the writing can say all kinds of stuff, like 'API service rating' and the SAE weight. It is uaually located on the back of the bottle. just make sure it says CI4+ next to the 'api service rating' to make your life easy, go to walmart, and purchase 4 one gallon jugs of shell rotella T synthetic sae 5w-40. it's a dark blue bottle with a handle on it and a black cap. you will use all but one quart or so of the 4 gallons for your oil change.

Actually, you will need all but 2 quarts.

The oil capacity is 15qts with filter change, but 1 qt does not drain out as it stays in the high pressure oil system. So... when you drain, your only draining 14qts... so refill with 13qts.... run it.... let it sit... then top off to bring to the max (or slightly lower level). Overfilling these motors is a no-no!!!

Again they hold 15qts, but only ever drain and refill with 14qts (or slightly less).

I'm hoping I don't need to buy a Redline diesel oil (ester) or full PAO (who makes one?) to keep this baby alive... Question for you: I've read the new CJ spec dino oil (at least the new Chevron Delo) is formulated for better shearing resistance than CI rated oil -- do you think we'll still need a synthetic when CJ4 is out, or is it a: only oil analysis will tell, type of thing?

From what I have read in "Diesel Power" magazine (October '06 issue), the CJ4 oil spec is great and a lot better than the current CI4+ spec. It will be available as a dino only oil then synthetic... which depends on how each oil company/brand does their roll-out. One would use a synthetic depending on their beliefs of synthetic oil, what they want from it, and what they expect from it.

I chose synthetic (5W-40) for cold weather starts and operational benefits... but like the better "heat characteristics and protection" it offers the turbo bearings on shut engine shutdown.

I buy my oil in 55 galon drums from the co-op in town. The oil ratings exceed the manufactures recommendations for JD, Case, Cat, Ford, Cummins.......... all of them. It's ALLOT cheaper than buying it anywhere else (of corse we go through 150 gallos/year). I'm not saying go buy a 55 gallon drum, but look into what the local co-op has, you might get a deal. Sure is better than selling out and buying the stuff at Wal-mart. Oh, and go with 15 qts of 15-40.

i run rotella in mine no problems. at work in our over the road tractors we run dino oil 30000 miles between oil changes. if you choose to run synthetic me personally i would not start till after 15000 miles on the motor to get it broke in ,then swith to synthetic.

I run Mobil Delvac 15w40. The blackstone lab oil reports look good.

Oil will always be a personal choice. Changing anything you use at regular intervals or when extreme conditions occur is best. Personally I am very paranoid about my 04. Eventhough I have no problems to speak of this forum can drive you crazy. For me I won't put anything in this Ford other than "Ford" stuff. So I will only use Motorcraft 15-40 diesel oil at 4000 mile intervals.

The oil is too important to the injectors not to keep it clean and servicable. With the change coming to our oil this may become more important. Same with additives in the fuel. I have never not added some in every tank.
I my cars that do not have roller lifters I already add GM EOS with every change...I will not take chances...Good luck
