I have a 1991 Ford F-250 with a 7.3 diesel. Lets say i put a banks turbo in. What else would i have to do as in exhaust, heads, pistons, rings, injectors, and the injector pump???(or anything else) I have about 305K on the motor with no work done to it. E40D tranny.
Are you talking about rebuilding it also? With 305k it must be using some oil. Problem with these engines are they were never designed to be rebuildable. They can be sleeved but only by a really good machinist.
I have very little experiance with turbo diesels. How does a turbo affect fuel mileage, horsepower, torque, and engine life for a truck with 305k and no rebuild???
I did my '91 with a Banks kit three years ago. There is no comparison to describe the amount of power gain I got. Mine had 134K on it with an E4OD with the same milage. The Banks kit is not as easy as they make it sound to put on, but more than worth it. My mileage has increased some, but the truck is too much fun to drive for fuel economy. My tranny went south about 3K after the install and so it has been built and upgraded now with a new torque converter which has again increased the useable power since there is no slip. It does not have the "get up and go" my '05 Powerstroke has, but it will tow just as much weight on the gooseneck trailer!
They give you around 50 extra HP, so if you can use it wisely, you could see a small improvement in mileage (once you are done smoking the tires and playing with it that is).
All right!!! Well im considering one now. Im planning on putting it in and selling the truck (about two years after i put it in hahaha) and then sell it and buy myself a powerstroke. Thanks for your help.
