I am stuck with a college budget, but would like to get a few more horses out of this rig. It just seems like the e brake is on or something and I have to give the thing so much gas. I mean it drives nice and has ok power, but I wouldn't mind a little extra.
I was just thinking of taking a sawzall to the front of the muffler and the back and just welding in a straightpipe to connect the exhaust. Does anyone thing I would get noticable power and maybe .5 mpg better? Would it be super loud? I wouldn't mind a good rumble, but i dont want a pair of harleys following me everywhere if you know what I mean.
larger pipe will do more than just hacking the muffler off. It depends on what you have available to you as far as equipment. I built a 3" and larger exhaust from scrap pipe from a local heavy truck salvage yard. The pipe was ok, just had problems at some joints. It also gave me bends, stainless steel band clamps, and such.It started at 3.25, then at the muffler I designed it went to 3.5, then a 4" tip at the end. I wrote an article here plus some other pics in my gallery.
I have run stacks on my truck for years, when it was a NA motor and had no muffler, with the end of the exhaust being 2 feet from the window it was rather loud in the cab with the windows down.
Since I have added a turbo, now the wind in the west coast mirrors makes more noise than the engine does at 75 MPH.
The 3" all the way would definitly sound better. You will notice more gain as well. Also keep in mind, moving that much air out requires sucking more air in. All that extra exhaust wont help much if you dont have more air coming in. Think about opening up ur intake as well. I also agree with dave, I have straight on mine but i also have a turbo and its nice. But I think the opened exhaust without turbo will be too obnoxious. Look for maybe a straight flow muffler to stick in line with your 3". Hope this helps.
