Narrow a Ford 9"!

I have a Ford 9" rear in my '53 F100 street rod. It is from a Donor '71 Torino. I have 15x10" wheels in the rear, but they stick out about 3" past the rear fenders. I plan to tub the bed about 4". I need to get the axle housing narrowed about 3 1/2" on each side. I have found some people who will do it at a reasonable price, but they are not near enough to the East Coast to deliver and pickup the housing. I don't want to pay the shipping cost both ways. If I could find someone within a days drive of Delaware who does this work regularly and has jigs for alignment, I would take the housing to them.

Does anyone have contact information for a shop close to my area that does this work?

closest I can think of is Moser Engineering, in Indiana.

I have narrowed a few 9" rears. The process is quite simple and can be handled by any competent metal worker. You might want to concider buying a jig, having it done locally, then selling the jig. It might work out better dollarwise when it's all over.

Moser in Indiana is possible. I may be going near there in a few weeks.

Where can I buy a jig?

To narrow a housing, you simply cut off the yoke on each end, cut the tube to length, then weld a new yoke in place. Is that correct?

You need to keep the axle ends sqaure to the center housing. Cutting and just welding them will not be the best approach. You need a jig to keep things sqaure. I have no clue where one could buy a jig.

I understand, a jig is necessary to keep the ends square with the housing/differential or else the bearing will be out of line.

I can't believe that there isn't someone who has this jig and does this work two states closer to the right coast than Indiana.

another possibility is to grind the welds off where the tubes meet the center section. saw the tubes the desired length (minus 1/4" if you intend to face the ends in a lathe) and reweld them in. The key to keeping it straight is with an axle shaft running inside to keep it lined up. The jig, to me, is a built cradle that also clamps down over the top to keep the 3 parts lined up. The axle shafts themselves can probably be bought from moser or currie. my 2 cents

Autofab Racecars in Severn Md. I'll look into them. Do they have a website? I'll Google the name and see if I come up with anything.

I believe that the axle shafts themselves can be cut and resplined by any machine shop.

War Wagon,

Where in California? I used to live in Morgan Hill (Bay Area). I bought the truck in Riverside in 1997. Been working on it since.

I bought a small home made trailer that has a 9" axle that is only about 48" from backing plate to backing plate. It looks stock to me. I do not know what it came out of, but, maybe you can source another 9" that might fit your app.

Going by the springs, it had to come out of something small. If you do not have any luck, let me know, I can remove it if you want to buy it since I was going to change out the springs for 3500 pound springs anyway.

The place in Severn MD that was posted previously can do it. That is about a three hour round trip. I think that if I make an appointment, they can do it while I wait, so I only have to make one trip.

I lived in the SF Bay area four nearly six years, but traveled to LA for work frequently. I spent most of my free time in the beach areas south of LAX. I wondered inland searching for my F100 project truck, and bought the '53 F100 in Riverside. It needed a lot of work, but all of the sheet metal was straight and rust free. It had been parked in someone's garage since '67. He had started to work on it, but never finished. Now it sits in my garage in Delaware. While it is also never finished, it has come a long way, and I show it on weekends.
