First of all, I want to thank jharvey for his advice and install instructions.
With that being said, in search for the lowest EGTs possible while towing, the next logical step after installing my van turbo w/ATS housing seemed to be an aftermarket intercooler. I know, I could have gotten the 6.0 CAC for a song and a dance but I wanted more...and that is just what I got. You should see the size of this thing compaired the stock CAC!
The install was straight forward, instead of messing with draining the radiator, I removed the cross member right above the CAC. Everything came out and went in beautifully. I already did the 6.0 tranny cooler upgrade so the stock lines were not an issue. I also replaced all six boots with clamps that I got from dieselsite.com.
Things I noticed while driving:
-van turbo has little to no lag what so ever, its spools quick
-about 30-40 degree drop in EGTs empty at 70mph on flat interstate
-about 1-2 psi lower in boost at 70mph while on flat interstate
-lighter smoke
I can only amagine how shes going to tow like now.
i saw that, however i was commenting on how it was basically making no boost (heating the air) however it was still lowering temps, probably near ambient or even ambient.
im sure it is a wonderful mod for you Kevin, as you push what, 1700* pulling? does your EGT still peg past 1600* at the end of the run, or is it within the gauge range?
Yeah Kris, I mainly bought it for towing purposes. I did notice that the EGTs do not climb as fast when accelerating like they used to. My van turbo is still in break-in mode so I have'nt poured the coals to it yet. Was it worth the $? Time will tell, especially when we go to the Lake (camping)next month and I hit the one hill that I have to back off the throttle because of EGT issues. The same hill that I ran into surge issues(pre-WW). The same hill that I sometimes get stuck behind Dudges and Chebbies pulling their campers at 35-40mph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as the less boost at the same speed, jharvey told me I'm making the same power and the turbo is not working harder for it. I'll give an example: with my stock turbo and intercooler at 70mph I was making 5-6psi(EGTs at 800-810), today on the same streatch of road with my van turbo and Spearco CAC I was making 2-3psi at 70mph(EGTs at 750-760). Modest, yes. That's why I can't wait to tow with it.
Awesome!! Glad to know that you got it in with no problems. I think you'll notice a bigger difference while towing than what you stock one provided. And, you've already seen the difference in how quick the turbo spools. It kind of puts in to perspective just how restrictive the stock IC can be when we begin to crank up the power levels.
When you and Alan go out to get some AIT measurements, take note of how close the manifold temp is to the actual intake temp while you're cruising, and how slow it actually climbs when you're on the throttle. You will be pleased.
Oh, I've also got some pics of the Spearco IC compared to both a stock 7.3 IC and stock 6.0 IC in my webshots gallery. Link is in my signature.
Found the same with the Diesel Innovations Intercooler ($1150), AKA the big DIIC. Just got done with a dyno run today and my EGT's were not an issue. I saw great results while cruising on the highway, approx 100 degrees less than my stock IC. 900* EGT's at 90 mph. I noticed that the EGT's climbed at a much slower rate and the lag in the van turbo was less than before. I have'nt towed with it yet - but everyone else I have spoken to says you should get up to a 200 degree drop while towing.
