I have a mild knock (that continues with forward motion) in the front end when i make a sharp right turn - 4x4 problem? The Ex drives great and straight (no pull or drag noticeable). It happens when turning left also, but not as noticeable.
When I bought the Ex the locking hubs were hard to turn and I wasn't sure where to turn them to - there is no lettering on the hubs, just an arrow and a dot. I lined those up, because after reading the manual, that should be in the Auto setting. The **** will rotate both directions from there, so i think one direction is free and the other is lock - but which is which, I don't know.
I want to change the hubs out (especially after reading here). But I have too many other "Honey-Do" projects at home to find the time - so that may be a few weeks away. Even if I don't replace them right away, i plan on servicing them (disassembling, inspecting & lubing) and checking the vacuum hoses.
So is this anything to worry about? What should I be checking for? The components of the 4x4 system is one area that I probably have the least amount of knowledge in, I've just never done much with drive lines.
I brought my '04 X in for it's first dealer service and they did a complete/free inspection which included all suspension and related components. I was having similar issues/complaints as you. They found about a 1/4 inch of play in the ball joints and replaced them under warranty. No more noise, tightened up the front end/steering, and it was free! Good luck
