I have read other posts about the vehicle speed sensor and the ABS sensor, And I have already replaced the the VSS, It almost seemed to fix the problem until I tryed going somewhere like an hour away then it came back on the way there and again on the way back, If I stop at a light and turn the truck off and back on it is ok for awile, this is on a 95 f-350 7.3 diesel. I have yet to check the wires and connectors, but the speedometer never has any problems???
Instead of randomly replacing parts, you need to get the codes read. When the OD light flashes a code is stored. Without the code you don't know what needs fixin'.
Since the speedo never has any problems, it was a waste of time and money to change the VSS. Actually, changing any parts without knowing what's wrong is a waste of time and money.
I am new to this site, and hope to gain some information on my first Diesel. I have an '01 F350 with a 7.3. One day I was hauling a trailer (maybe 3500 lbs) and my OD light started flashing. It also would not let my transmission go in to overdrive. Is their a sensor that automaticaly kicks you out of overdrive?
I did get the codes read and autozone said it was the vehicle speed sensor??
I haven't seen an Autozone yet that has a scan tool that can read transmission codes. The speed sensor code may or may not have been the only code that was set.
I had a similar situation with my truck
it turned out to be a chaffed wire over the trans that was grounding out and causing the hard shifts, to the point where it was scary to drive the truck
In my case i pulled the connector on the right side of the trans and found the culprit wire, I just taped it up and added a few zip ties to the loom to keep it from happening again.
hope that helps
I cleaned the plug at the VSS and checked the wires today and took the truck to a friend that put it on a scanner he said I fixed it with the new VSS and just had to clear the codes, after cleaning the plug and replacing the VSS i have not had any problems, maybe to early to tell but im hoping.

did it just shift hard or did it kick out of gear, mine kicks out of overdrive and revs like its in nuetral until I put it in to 2nd gear.

mine does both first it kicks out of neutral and then after I put it into 2nd and keep driving then put it back into drive it starts to shift hard, anyway its fixed, it turned out to be what I was told it was called a RAPS ?? valve for the ABS system, its were the brake lines come into the block on the left frame rail and that has a sencer in it, the VSS accually runs through that. A 250.00$ part.
I hope your situation is different than mine but i had the exact same problems blinking od light and hard shift. The next thing i found was metal shavings in fluid, trans was shot. cheapest rebuild i could find was $1000.00 so i bought junkyard trans with 30k for $1050.00 hope this helps2000 4x4 superduty
