Hi... hoping someone can help. I have a 2001 ranger xlt 4x4 that, when turning the 4x4 switch on the dash, will not engage. I had it to the local Ford dealer today, and they said that the 4x4 control module is bad and needs replaced. First... is there anything that can be done to check to see if this really is the problem (also where it's at, etc,) and second... can these modules be purchased ad installed without having to give 500 bucks to Ford?
I'm a first time poster and don't really know too much about trucks, so please go easy.
1. Remove the passenger cowl side trim panel.
2. Disengage the locking tangs and remove the harness connectors.
3. Remove the screws.
4. Remove the 4WD control module.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
The "passenger cowl side trim panel" might be better described as the side trim piece down by the passenger's foot well.
The 'switch' activated 4wd has an actuator that sits on the side of the transfer case that is actuated by the switch position on the dash. Presumably, the dealer verified that the electrical signal is getting to the actuator and that nothing happened - otherwise you should verify that the signal actually arrives at the actuator. If you verify that this is the situation, you can purchase and install the actuator yourself, if you are so included. I'd suggest you first buy a Chilton's or Haynes service manual for your truck as it can help you with things like this - they are around $20 and at many bookstores.
