ok another question that has probaly had its rounds, but once again the thread search is not working for me! so here it is. gas excursions are being sold dirt cheap (wonder why). we all know that in a stock f-250 reg cab 2wd the 5.4 gets better milage. but im wondering the milage difference in a 4x4 excursion? big tires, the works. my question is with all the weight and the 5.4 working its butt off while the 6.8 isnt even sweating, would the milage start to even out?
thanks geoff
I wondered the same thing when i was looking for an Ex - I had a F150, SC, 4x4, 5.4l and it did great... but weighed ~6K (give or take a few 100). I couldn't imagine throwing another 2k on that truck and driving it around daily - don't get me wrong, it would pull it, but i hate to see the mpg's.
Now - I can tell you comparing the 2, the v10 is great. If I could get it in a f150... oh, I'm getting chills...
The v10 has great power and with the size and weight of the Ex, I just couldn't see owning one with a 5.4.
The 5.4 is OK for a Taxi-X ... but that's about all. Get the V10 & you'll never regret it. Diesels may get better MPG, but you need to exceed about 175K miles BEFORE the savings actually start ... takes that long to pay for the diesel via MPG savings ... and the cost difference buys a LOT of gasoline.
I have never driven one with a V8 but have driven about 10 with the V10. Not sure what the V8 gets for fuel milage but I consistantly get 15 with my V10 on the highway and have squeezed 18 out of it a few times on back roads.
My V-10 Excursion gets around 13-14 mpg empty, and about 9.5 mpg towing a 31 foot travel trailer that has a weight of 12,000 lbs. When towing, I run at the speed limit up hill and down hill. I don't see a V-8 being able to hold a light to the V-10.
I own a 4x4 5.4L X. It is the "Taxi - X". It does exactly what we want it to do very well; which entails hauling my wife, kids and in-laws around. I do not tow much. When I do, it is 2-place snowmobile trailer or my buddies 14' enclosed trailer, not a whole lot of weight. The most I have hauled with it would have been a 800 mile round-trip, with my wife, three kids, mother and father-in-law, luggage and the 14’ enclosed trailer with about 2500#. I have drove V10 and PowerStroke F-250’s, there is no comparison. However, I do not need that type of power 98% of the time in my X.
On the highway, I have got as good as 18-20 mpg. Towing and just around town it averages 10-12.
thanks for the info guys. well it looks like my thoughts were some what acurate. the v8 gets the better milage cruising on the highway, but strugles getting the weight moving in stop n go town traffic, as the v10 squeezes the better milage in town.
