How come when you accelerate normal, or if you don't downshift, the old 6.0 does not smoke, but does when you really get into it?
I was driving yesterday, and i was accelerating up a very slight incline, i was still in overdrive, but it wasnt enough to get me to speed fast enough because of upcoming traffic, so i made it downshift. It was night time, and in my mirror i could see headlights fade away as the smoke rolled out. It keeps rolling out until you ease back down.
Regardless of what I've attached to the hitch, ambient temperature, acceleration, etc., I've never managed to get my stock 6.0 to smoke that badly. You should only see that during heavy overfueling from a chip.
on my 6.0L is used to smoke like mad when you pushed it. The wife and I used to love to do it to tailgaters and ricers. That was premod though. Since then we've added a tuner, intercooler, and exhause,& after that our cat ran away from home. But any who ... since then with more air getting into the engine it doesn't smoke hardly at all. The power is definately there it's just working more efficently.
I think it was Gale Banks that said ... if you see black smoke coming out of your pipe ... that's visual HP you're waisting.

How do you know its an issue? Reason i ask is that i have watch other NEW 6.0's pass me and theirs smoke too. I figured it was pretty normal. A bad egr ought to have other symptoms beside a little smoke when downshifting on an inclined at 70mph....?? I guess i kind of assumed it was cleaning out the carbon in the pipe since i don't normally drive it hard enough to make it smoke.
At any rate, if the EGR is dirty or bad, it aint getting fixed until it starts idling rough, gets a CEL, or the mileage drops below 15.1 mpg city.

I always assumed on ours that all the **** that came out was mostly blowing the crud out of the cat and the exhaust that built up. My wife drove it lightly rarely blowing it out.
