Hey,I hear a fairly big tire center near me is replacing air filled tires with nitrogen. They claim better gas mileage and no rusting,or buildup on metal and aluminum rims. All for $5 a tire. What do ya think bullcrap or nah?
I've heard of it. I would ask around some more before I did it. How much better gas mileage? I really cant see Nitrogen filled tires getting that much better gas mileage than tires with the proper psi from the air hose at the local gas station. Who knows though...
the nitrogen does not leak out of the tires as fast as good old air. Therefore the tires stays properly inflated and should help with fuel economy.
I have nitrogen in my 350 tires but then again, they don't remove the air when they install the original tires, you get a nitrogen/oxygen mix. You can add regular air at a later time should the nitrogen leak out. All that happens is that you dilute you oxygen/nitrogen mix and eventually you will need to do a full replacement with nitrogen to see the slower leak capabilty.
Just had service done on Aviator and dealer charged $37 for replacement of nitrogen in tires. If I knew you could get it elsewhere for $5 a tire i would have done it at a outside tire place. That was just for the nitrogen not even labor. As for gas milage there's no difference. Still get 13mpg. Seems like this engine has a straw in the tank and never takes a break until its all gone
I have read numerous postings on this and diid a little research myself in the past. There is a fraction of fuel improvement maybe and not too much else to gain. Generally they are saying that the tire will probably wear out before any rust corrosion will occur. Temperature issue is not really an issue since standard vehicles drive in low enough temperatures not to make a difference. How much gain can be had for a few bucks worth of a gas in the tires? The concensus from what I have read is that it is not necessary.
Nitrogen is all Costco uses and they do not charge, if you bought the tires there of course. They claim it increases tire life which makes sense since oxygen and heat in side the tire cause the rubber compound to break down. Can't do any thing about the outside of the tire in the sun etc. tho.

Reason: further explanation
Air pressures grow with rise in temp and decrease with temp drop, but nitrogen stays at same pressure over a larger temperatur range resulting in less heat in the tires, this is why Nascar uses nitrogen in tires, if they used air with the force or weight they exert on the tires they would blow out quicker than they do now.
No matter if the dealer charges for it or not, it is a brilliant advertising gimmick. I wouldn't pay extra, but if the dealer does it for free anyway...
I've come to the same conclusion as other have - it's not a big difference. I have a Travel Trailer and they started touting the nitro there for trailer tires - it seem to make sence there because you seldom wear out trailer tires before they rot and the nitrogen reduces rotting (or so they say). If it's being done for free (like at Costco) then, alright - but to pay for it, I just don't see the real value of it.
I have a friend that works for Tire Kingdom and he affirmed my thoughts - said it was just another way to get $$ from the customer.
