Mpg Help!

Posting for a friend.

00 f350 4x4 psd. looking for ways to improve mpg. Truck is used for landscape business. Was told that a f250 would get a lot better mpg's vs the dually. ( I dissagree). Your input is greatly appreciatted! which chip or programmer is getting the best results?

MPH or MPG? Mine already goes faster than it needs to. Clarify the question and I have tips for both.

There is no reason at all to presume that a dually will get better mpg, in fact both trucks being equal just the weight alone will cost you. The simple little mods I have listed have allowed me to get up to 24 mpg highway and 17 to 19 city depending on lead in my foot. I have found that the exhaust and intake mods have actually cost me mpg because they make for such cool sounds I tend to stay on it more than I should. When I was without the 80 HP chip for about a month I lost about 3 mpg, so that is the first thing I would do. Everyone else here will tell you that gauge's are very important, and I suppose they are if you are going to do a lot of heavy towing. I just use mine to haul tools and a fun toy to drive, so I do not worry about gauges. 181,000 pretty much trouble free miles can't be wrong. So I am doing something right

A dually will generally get worse mpgs due to the added mass and the fact that most are geared lower than srw trucks, all other things being equal 2xor4x4, auto/stick etc.

I have experienced a loss of MPG since chipping my truck. This is a direct result of increased MPH and my newfound lead foot. I sold the chip idea to the wife using the economy line but have had no interest trying to see what I can get. I generally flogg mine, or as they say drive it like I stole it.

Mark, I generally just haul the ATV and my boat. I would still recommend gauges. They are fun to watch but more importantly they will tell you right away when something is amiss. That can save big bucks in the end. JMO.

actually that's what he was told that the srw would get better mileage than the dually. I mean sure it's less weight and mass, but is it really worth loosing the carrying capacity and stability for a few mpg's?

i am gonna do gauges first (x-mas), then I will have to toss a coin on exhaust or chip next.

I think I am gonna get the 80eco from jody. Its more than I'll ever need.

from the postings I have seen on this board:

generally two types of drivers, those who are geezer drivers and the rest of them.

geezers usually cruise at no more than 2000 rpm, take 6 blocks to get up to the speed limit, slow down 6 miles before the red light...... all that stuff. I be a geezer.

some drivers take great joy out of blowing off ther rice rocket next to them, especially if they can fill up the car with black smoke.

My rule of thumb is that for every time you mash the fuel pedal really hard, you just spent a cup of fuel, or about 20 cents.

Dually with 4.10's seem to get about 12 to 17 mpg on average, with a decrease when towing

SRW are all over the place starting at 12 and in my case going all the way up to 22 1/2.

some drivers get more some get less. If I needed the towing capacity, I'd get a dually. If I just want to haul 6 crew and occaisionally a medium trailer, I opt for the SRW.

Your mileage may vary

Depends on what his primary use for the truck is. If he is gonna haul heavy regularly then dually is the way. If only occasionally, then SRW. I've seen some duallies get some pretty good mileage but for the most part they suck it down due to the gearing on the interstate. They can pull like nobody's business though.

I am rapidly becoming a geezer but refuse to drive like one.
