Backgound is this. 1995 F150 4x4 with 192k miles., automatic. I am experiancing problems when the truck shifts gears. There is a strong surge, this will go on for several days and then it will smooth out. A few days later the surge comes back. This surge (which is like it is slamming into gear - kinda violent) happens when you go into reverse or drive - makes no difference. I have checked the transmission fluid level and it is fine. That is as far as my expertise will allow me to go.
Any ideas??? Do I need to be looking for someone to rebuild it or is it possible that the fluid has broke down. I bought the truck several years ago (175k miles) and I do not know if there has ever been any fluid replaced???
Try getting the fluid flushed out (from a real tranny place, not a quick lube or something) before you put a lot of money into a rebuild. Maybe it would atleast fix the problem for a while...
I was hoping it might be a sensor or something but I am afraid it might be something internal. It just puzzles me that the problem is random and kinda fixes itself temporarily.
Does it do it shifting all gears or just from park to reverse and park to drive? My truck will make a clunk sometimes when going into reverse. I'm just waiting for it to blow up before I try to get it fixed.
Nope - It does through all the gears, 1st to 2nd will give you whiplash and the rest are moderate. I can almost time the surge and let off of the gas to ease the jerk. By tomorrow it will fade away and then be back in several days. Strange stuff.
you have driven the truck for 2 years and 20k miles and did not know when the trans fluid was changed before you owned it and you are suprised that it is giving you random problems shifting!
drain trans and convertor and put a new filter in before you go another week like it is.
