Hi, Ford Lovers! My name is Carmody, and I live in Wichita, Kansas. I test drove a '65 F-100 last night, and I'm thinking of buying it. Is there anything specific I should look out for in this model?
It has a 352-V8 (owner claims it's original, but who's to say?) with exhaust manifold leaks (nothing too worrisome), the brakes are tired and pull a bit, and the clutch will probably need replaced soon. It is impossible to shift down into first if the truck is in motion at all, but goes into gear fine at a stop light. (This is not unlike my '63 Rambler American with 3-on-the-tree.) The truck was hit in the front fender/headlight by a small car recently, but none of the metal work interferes with the tires or steering.
The guy wants $500 for the truck, and I'm thinking of dickering up from about $350. You guys are the experts here...any advice you can give me in this situation? I really appreciate it, and thanks in advance. I can be e-mailed at nerv0usreNo Email Addresses In Posts!) or carmody@kcisp.net.
hi. carmody, I think that if you had to replace the manifolds(they often warp beyond milling),and you had to replace the wheel cylinders or drums in the brake system(the two most likely culprits in a brake pull situation, and whatever it takes to repair the body damage, for $500.00 i dont think you can go wrong.then again i might be biased,i love these old fords.one thing youmight look at tho is the core support or radiator wall,it seems these will rust and replacement parts ,from what i have seen here are not readilly available.but there are guys here that have repaired or built new ones.by BTW being in witchta do you ever get to the national baseball congress world series?look out for my home team the MATSU MINERS. lamar
Hey, thanks for the good tips. And the NBC baseball games are going on right now, in fact!!! I had free tickets for the last two nights, but it's incredibly hot here (over 90 degrees at 10:00 p.m. every night, with 60%+ humidity), so my wife and I haven't gone out to any of the games yet.
Again, thanks for your wise words, and I'll let you know what happens.
Best,
Carmody
PS: Matsu? Like Matsumoto? What's the skinny on the name?
Carmody, Here are a few things to look out for, The radiator support (rotting at the bottom, the front cab supports, ends of the center cab beam, rear cab corners, front of bed floor, front of hood. If the body aint too banged up, and the engine aint crap, $500.00 should be doable, $350.00 is a bring it home.
IMHO of course,
John
