Debating about tinting my side windows on my 1980 ford f 150. Would be doing it just mainly for looks. Dont know allot about tinting as far as how dark would look good etc. the truck is red. Also would i need to tint the rear window to as it has one of those vinyl graphic stickers across the back window on the outside? any help would be very much appreciated.
Check your local laws about how dark they allow tinting to be. If you're tinting the side windows, I would also tint the rear window so everything matches. You usually can tint the rear window darker than you can tint the side windows. Are you planning on installing it yourself? I would reccomend taking the truck to a local window tinter and get an estimate. Tinting is a hard, tedious job. I tried it once, and gave up halfway through the first window.
sorta doing it myself it will be done at my parents auto repair shop when i do the sterio system since ill already have the doors apart. im gonna take the glass out to tint it tomake it easier. i checked the laws for jersey as far as i can tell the only rule is no metallic or mirrored tint, no darkness limit
I live in Jersey and the law is no tint allowed on the front windows and windshield. You will not pass inspection if you do. I personally have tint on mine done by a professional. In recent years, I would find some private inspection station to pass my truck and pay them their fee plus a little more for their time. Since we now have the 2 year inspection, I find it much easier and cheaper to just peel it off every 2 years, go to regular inspection, and then have it put back on.
When I had my tinting done I wasn't sure how dark either so the shop put some sample pieces on just to see how it would look. (they only did a small section.) If you can get a sample put on do it on a cloudy day or out of the sun so you get a better feel of what the reduction in vision will be. I really like the look of the tinting but is does create some visibility issues when backing up on a cloudy day, at night or in a parking garage.
I went with 35% on my Mustang. It looks great but also shouldn't draw a ton of attention from the LEOs. The great thing about tint is that it actually helps keep your vehicle cool when it sitting in the sun as well as preventing fading of the interior.
I did not know that the truck was registered historic when I replied. Anyway, I had the front 2 windows tinted 20%. It matches the rear factory windows on my Lariat perfectly.
Debating on how to install the tint on the side windows when i do this because i will have the doors apart to do the audio system. Which means ill have the glass out. Is it better to run the tint to the edge of the glass or will the tint get messed up slideing through the window gasket?
I would spend the $50 extra and bring it to a shop. Tinting is very hard to do, and not to be an *******, but I can almost guarantee there will be bubbles. Take it to a shop.
I used to tint my own...what a doofus! They actually came out good, but the stuff you get at Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. always seemed to turn purple after a year or two, and it IS a PITA. Even if you get it on without any creases, wrinkles or bubbles, which is possible, I always seemed to get a little piece of dirt, sand, hair or some other crap stuck in there somewhere. The going price around here (Central Florida) is around $60-$80 bucks....professional material and a lifetime guarantee on both tint and installation. If you do it yourself, you'll probably have to buy 2 kits, because if you screw up even one piece, there isn't enough left to finish the job. Also, don't use the stuff you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes for tinting house windows. It's made for perfectly flat windows and doesn't conforn to curved glass as well as the automotive stuff, at least in my experiences.
I'd rather stick my finger in a light socket and turn it on than window tinting. The little money some of these masters of tint charge isn't worth the infuriating ordeal of tinting myself. Nice to have tinting. Helps makes driving more pleasant.
