new trannsmission

well i took my truck into a tranny shop because i thought it had been shifting odd and they just called back. aparently 2nd gear doesnt work. so i have 1st and od so i had planned on putting a manual in eventually and at $2100 to rebuild this thing now sounds good. so if anyone has a zf5 from their diesel parts colection they are willing to let go i'll buy it off of you. im in bellingham, wa 98226 i can get freight shipping but i would prefer to be able to pick it up. of course that would depend on how close you are. and now at the end of my rambling another question. do i need to shorten or lengthen the driveshaft? and i would of course need the fly wheel clutch and pedals and all the other fun bits needed. thanks in advance.

Lareth,

Is your truck a 4x4? If so you would have to deal with two driveshafts.

If it is a 2WD then only the rear shaft would have to be modified.

The ZF5 (S42 or S47, diesel Model Trannies) are good standard trannies and hence quite popular. Last I checked a rebuilt ZF5 was going for about +$CDN 3,000 here in British Columbia, Core Value was about $600.

If you add in the cost of the rest of the gear you need then the conversion can get a bit expensive. Probably double than what you would pay to get you C6 overhauled.

Seb....

tell the tranny shop you don't have od in a c6 and not to mention that it probly just needs to be adjusted never heard of a c6 costing that much to r&r cause this is almost the price of a brand new one just my op anyway

i agree with the above comments also. no OD in a C/6, and his price is about $1000 to high.
i just had a C/6 and BW 1356 transfer case completely redone by a shop i know, and total bill was only $1,700 out the door.

Holy crap this shop is trying to take you!!! A B&M complete c6 ready to drop in is only 1K and that's still too much money. A complete rebuild kit, plates and everything is about $225 for a good one. The last one I had done was about $700 for parts and labor. Tell these jerks to take a hike and that you won't pay a rebuild price of a modern trans on a simple c6.

Thumbs up C6 rebuild

check out the yellow pages find a transmision parts jobber you will find a master kit (with out steel plates) about a 100., rebuilt converter slightly higher, and a shift kit from 30 or so. Get a rebuild manual, they show tear down and rebuild step by step including updates every one should and can do The C6 is one of the simplest to rebuild. very few parts are different from the gas (some parts in the valve body, governer, case, etc) trans, just have a clean bench and put the parts in a line as you take them apart.

hadnt thought of rebuilding it myself. if they had said it was only $700 then i might have had em do it but i didnt even consider for a second when they told me either of those prices. automatic trannsmissions have always seemed kinda scary as far as taking it apart. i'll look into that. at least as a bonus they didnt charge me anything to look at the truck.

The T 19 transmission is almost bullet proof.
But till you do all the swapping to go from automatic to manual tranny it will be time consuming.

Dave,

I am new to this site but have been a owner of a 6.9 86 4x4 for over ten years -- I've thought of changing from an automatic to standard as well. How hard is it to find all the parts/pieces (other than transmission) to convert?? Is there some cort of kit?? I don't know if it is a road I want to go down in the future........

C6 rebuild

In fact they have vidieo's that also show you how to do em. usally the clutch's and plates are burnt so its easy to figure that out, just pay attention on how the o'rings go. and take the valve body apart section by section, I did my first c6 in '68, when I worked for a ford dealer in utah, and I had real reservations as I had just got out of the ford tech school on the trans. (they spent a whole one day tear down and assmbly)
