Just something i am wondering. I think a 99+ F2/350 would be a fun project truck(not that I could afford one NOW). just something to lift and wheel and play with. I personally like the 7.3L Diesel better then the 6.0L. but that's me.
So What was the last year for the 7.3L diesel in the F2/350's ?
If i was going to buy one I would buy a 99-04 because they all have leaf springs in the front and rear. 2004 was the last year for the front leaf springs right ?
If i didn't buy a diesel I would want the 300 HP 3 valve 5.4L V8. Which came out in 2004 right ?
What was the first year for the 3 valve V10 ?
How can you go wrong with a 10.25 inch rear and D60 front.
I don't know this is just something in my head right now I can't shake.
my friend has a 2004 with front Leafs and the 3 valve 5.4L. So I do know you could get the 5.4L with the 3 valves and the leaf springs.
The 3-valve 5.4 was pretty close to the power of the 2 valve V10 so i would have thought the V10 would have went 3-valve the same year. but i think you are right i think the V10 never got the 3-valve until 2005.

yeah i just saw in another thread that the power output of the V10 was 310HP and 425 pound feet of torque from 2000 to 2004. So that answered that.
So basiclly
If I was buying a diesel i would want a 99-02
V10 i would want a 2000-2004
5.4L the perfect year would be 04 only but i guess any 99-04 would still be good.
I think 2002 was the last FULL year for the 7.3L... there may be some early 2003 models with it.
Actually, both the 7.3L and the 6.0L were both offered in 2003. So...2003 was the last 7.3L available.

According to my Service manual the rear-end is a 10.50" Sterling FORD. The D60 was not available until mid-year 2001. Prior to that, it was the D50.
According to my research, the 5.4L 3v was not available in the SD series until 2005 model year. Info found:
2004 5.4L 260 hp V8
Horsepower 260 @ 4500 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 350 @ 2500 RPM
Yes the 5.4L 3v is a nice engine...and I see that you are looking at the 300hp rating, but also think about the torque rating. That is much more important for these big heavy trucks...especially since you are thinking about a lift with large tires. Just something to think about...especially when that 300hp is at 5000RPM. Almost never going to get to that RPM with these SD's. Also the torque RPM is quite high too. At 3750 RPMs... Info found:
2005 5.4L 300 hp V8
Horsepower 300 @ 5000 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 365 @ 3750 RPM

Wow Thats all good to know.
1. some of the 2003's have the 7.3.
2. I no longer want a 99-01 since the D60 was not out until 2001.5
3.Excellent point on the 3v vs 2v 5.4L the 3v has the power(and i was assuming more torque) but with only 15 more ft/lbs of torque thats not much more to make that big of a difference. What really makes the difference is the 1250 RPM difference in the peak torques.
i have a 2006 5.4 3v and i really like it...plenty of power for what i need it for...if i where you i would be looking into the diesel...my sisters b/f has a 99 7.3...good truck...lots of torque...but man that thing is a dog from the start...we lined them up and i beat him by at least 6 truck lenghts...yeah i know im a little light and i have 3.73 gears and he as 4.30 but hook up a 10000# trailer and lets see who wins...he would smoke me...if you plan on lifting one of the gas engines with large tire ... expect single digit mpgs!
basically my thoughts are if a diesel comes along for a good price i'll take it but for the most part they have been way more money. i found a V10 excusion for $12K(I think it had 60K miles and was a 2001). Not that i really want the excusion but $12k is a nice price. i really think I want something in the $12-15K range.
If you are looking for a diesel and you want one with the forged rods(able to handle more power than the PMR's) you will want to look at a late 99 or 00. Someone on here posted which months of 00 are the best because of the computer and tranny cooler in the raditor.

if i did that the front axle would be the D50 and not the D60 which came in the 2001.5 and later. Thats kind of a trade off either way isn't great. I don't think I would not put super money into the engine either way. The 2001 to 2003 7.3L is still a great engine to fix up right ? and it would still be able to handle plenty of power increase right ?

On the part about 7.3 being better than the 6.0. There is no comparison, the 6.0 should be avoided at all costs, especially if it is out of warranty. They will eat every bit of money you have. Tow truck company's make alot of money on these things, anyway that's just my input if you buy one you will see the woe of the 6.0.
