I have a 99 f-250 v10. There is a bad grinding noise coming from the front axle,
in 4 wheel it is ok but 2 high every time I hit a bump it grinds, The front hub ***. has just been replaced along with the ball joints. Any ideas??
When you say front hub,do you mean 4x hub or wheel bearing unit(some guys call that the hub also)?
If the 4x hub was changed ,I'd say you have a problem with the small needle bearings that support the axle shaft.

Don't forget that even in 2 wheel drive (rear wheels only) the front axle and ring and pinion is still moving. It is engaged at the transfer case. Your problem could be at the differential. And when you engage the front axle, the load could somehow stop the noise. Maybe check you fluid level and or have that front differential checked out.

His front diff is not spinning unless ,his hubs are locked in or the transfercase is in 4wd.
What is most likely happening is
the front hubs were changed and the wheel bearings were changed ,the axle shaft may have been badly worn and who ever did his work didn't want to get into changing the shaft. Now the axle is not supported properly through the wheel bearing and when he hits a bump that axle start to bind and spin
It could also be a bad 4x hub.
go under the vehicle and try to turn your front axle shafts by hand and see if they turn free .

fortyfords, you are right...I forgot about the locking hubs...... Both the hubs and the transfer case has to be locked in and in 4WD for everything to be spinning.
I had the same symptoms with my 99 super duty. ended up pulling my axle shafts in the spring and found out to late that the needle bearings had seized to the shafts, trashed my outter axle shafts . if anyone knows where to get outter shafts please let me know
Man, am I glad someone else owns my 99 for the last 4 years. I spent almost 4 years and 100k having hubs, axels, rotors and bearings changed till the day I dumped it! Check out some earlier threads on 99's. This was a major problem for Ford in 99. trimman
I wonder why. The 99's aren't much different than the 04's..Same bearings. My bearings are still stock. Mfg date 3-3-98. I have backups but I think they are going to stay in the boxes for a while.
I seem to have the same problem was wondering can you change the little needle bearing or do you ahve to replace the whole hub. If not do you have part #
If you had the work done I say take it back and make them do it over. Cause they definitely didn't do something right. If you did it yourself, well you got to do it again. Good luck either way.
