Unhappy 1999 Ford Explorer

My Explorer will not hold idle. If not constantly on gas, idle slips below 1000 RPM & shuts off. Restarts ok, but will not hold. This problem used to get better throughout the day, but now it will not hold at all. Please help me - I so appreciate it! Thank you!

IAC needs to be cleaned or replaced. Very common problem.

Question Ok

I took off the IAC and cleaned it out and put it back. It was a bit grimey, but not too bad. Anyway, put it back on & the truck still won't hold an idle w/out being on the gas all the time. We're going to try replacing the IAC with a new one, but could there be anything else wrong?

Thank you!

Could be the computer. The computer controls the idle. Have you also tried cleaning the MAF?(mass airflow sensor)

One other thing that comes to mind... have you pulled the codes yet? Even if the CEL is out, there can still be codes stored that may help diagnose the problem.

There is an air flow sensor, I think it's in the line between the filter and the intake, that can get dirty and gummed up. This sends an incorrect signal to the computer and then the fuel air ratio goes way off. Take it out, or find where it is, and clean it very gently with a q-tip and carb cleaner.
