Hi Guys,
I've been a member for a little while but never posted, I think i've read everything there is about the piston slap issue, My 98 Expo 4x4 5.4 has the classic cold knock on startup ( fairly audible ) but, it does not always go away, I can have the truck running for hours city and Hwy, and as soon as I get out for a listen at idle, there is the knock, not quite as loud but very audible. It get's lot's of love. Oil change every 3000-4000 km ( 10-30 Penz.) I've tried every oil filter there is. Tried synthetic, tried 5w20, tried lucas.. But the knock is there hot or cold 70% of the time. The funny part is sometime's the motor is absolutely quiet and just purr's at idle silently, So it's not a rod knock or anything major. I've had lot's of people listen to it and everyone says piston slap. I love the truck, it's still got good power and get's the milage it should. Just wondering if anyone is having or had the same issue?
I'm open to anything
Fantastic site, and thanks in advance.
Thanks for the response, but It's definately not an exhaust leak.
I've heard many, the noise is intrenal, my thoughts were more along the line of possible timing chains. Can they make knocking type noises? How are they tensioned?
Again Thanks
I have a 99 Expedition with a 4.6, 224,000 miles that is making the same noise. I have been told that the timing chain will make a tapping noise because of stretch in the chain and wear in the chain guides causing too much slack. I really want to confirm this before I attemp to tear out the front of the engine to replace timing chains.
