The Saga Continues...

well got all the crud out of my cooling system,used the amonia trick and a good back flush,but my truck still over heats... found right side temps about 30 degress higher! checked temp at pumps,stats and temp senders and right side was way hotter! is it possible 1 water pump could cause my truck to over heat,the thermostats are new so i dont suspect right side is stuck,but ya never know...PLEASE HELP!!! IM REALLY STUMPED NOW!!!

Can you provide some history on the cooling system. How old are the water pumps? When did it start over heating? How long have you been monitoring both sides? Stuff like that.

Also, what do you consider overheating (what temperature)? What brand are both new thermostats? Could there be air in the heaterlines?

Thirty degrees is a lot of difference, but if one is 160 and one is 190 that's a whole different animal than if one is 180 and the other is 210. The right side does tend to run hotter, no one has ever definitively found why.

Like Tex says, we need to know what the whole story is. Especially since this is possibly a blown head gasket or worse.

ok ,truck has been sittinhg for 2o years,had a lot of rust & crud in cooling system,flusshed cooling system /radiator several times replaced t sats and all hoses,truck sat at hight idle for over and hour and never over heated,as soon as i drive her she'll over heat, did find a 30 degree tempature difference between left and right sides,as truck sits at idle tempatur will creep back down.if head gasket was blown wouldnt vehicle over heat at idle also

ALSO REFER TO MY POSTS-"JUST WHEN I THOUGHT " & COOLING SYSTEM/TEMP GAUGE HELP FOR HISTORY

If you blew a head gasket, you'd see evidence of coolant loss and white smoke from the exhaust. Any coolant in the oil? If the truck sat all those years, The impeller on that side that's overheating, could be rusted away. THis would cause a drop in the flow on that side. At idle, it would be ok. We had a Aerostar that did that and when we pulled the pump, the vanes on the pump were rusted away. I'd pull the pump on that side and check it. You never know....

First thing I would check is your exhaust system and make sure there is no obstruction on the hot side. By obstruction, I mean, crud in the pipe or a dent that may be restricting flow.

I would replace the water pumps on general principle, Napa still sells them, I can get you the part # if you need them.

exaust is free from obstructions
and i could use part #s for pumps!!!

Just thought I would mention this. I once saw a water pump on a flathead so eat up with corosion the the little impellers were eat off and not doing anything with what was left.

Not sure which is right and which is the left but these are the #'s on the boxes that I have. I got them with a junk flathead that I bought. They were never installed and they look like the correct water pumps. That said, I've not yet tried to install them to verify they are correct for an 8BA engine.

You can also search for them on napaonline.com, to verify the part number and see a picture to be sure you are getting the correct one with the correct pulley. I had a heck of a time explaining to the guy at O'reilly that his driver's side car pump with the small belt pulley was not the passenger side truck big belt pulley one that I ordered. Even more pain was convincing him it took two water pumps.
