97 4x4 First Problem Assistance Please. Read!!!!!

I have a 97 Expedition 5.4L 4x4. I use the 4wd about once every two months and it has always worked flawlessly. Well I had this oversized goodyear wrangler tires on and I just went and got some nice highway tires put on the truck. Well I used the 4x4 once with the new tires as we were going through some very sandy dirt. we switched it into A4WD and then into 4H. No problem.

Fast forward two weeks, and a Silverado was stuck in the sand. Well, I have pulled out, lets see, a Ford Ranger, a Jeep Wrangler, a Chevy Tahoe a Nissan XTerra, and Ford Crown Victoria. I figure this will be no problem. Well I pull up and get it all hooked up, switch it into A4WD and.....NOTHING. No underdash "Click Click" no A4WD light on the dash, no anything. I try 4H. Again, nothing, no underdash "click" no drivetrain clunk, nothing. I switch it into Neutral, put it into 4LO, again NOTHING. Its just like turning the temperature **** on the climate control. It makes no sound.

Normally, when switching the 4x4 selector it makes a "click" under the dash as the A4WD light comes on, or 4H or whatever. When I move the selector, it makes no sound now. When I would switch it to 4H, it would make a "click" sound and then a clunk in the drive train. Again, none of that happens.

I tried then under hood fuse for "4x4 Selector" or something like per the Ford Owners Manual, but it was not blown.

Help please.

Possible Shift Motor

I have a 1999 Lincoln Navigator with 190,000 miles. I am just having problems for the first time with my 4 wheel H and 4WL. My problem is not the shifter motor.

However, yours might be. I am attaching a link to a parts store that sells them. You might want to check your wiring to the shifter motor also. Maybe something happened and it has been broken or corroded. If not, you might want to see it there is a way to test the shifter motor to see if it is bad.

The shifter is an electronic shifter motor. I am assuming since you talked about the switch that you have an automatic transmission.

Good Luck!

Use a scanner capable of pulling Ford enhanced codes, and see if any 4WD codes are stored. Might help narrow down the problem.

I had the same problem, I just replaced my transfer case shift motor and now it works fine.. These are a known problem with ford. Here is a place to get the shift motor the cheapest around.
