I was driving back from Athens, GA today and my air conditioner messed up. It started spitting out fog and had a strong smell along with it. Last time I got my oil changed, he said I needed to get my coolant flushed sometime soon but didn't need it done right then. The air was still cold coming out but the smell was very strong. Another thing too, if I moved the thermostat back up towards the top but still on the cold air side, more fog came out. If the thermostat was set at its coldest level, less fog came out. I am hoping that the coolant is the and that's it. Does this sound right to anyone? Any other likely problems? How much should I pay to get the coolant flushed? Thanks for the help.

Both the A/C and coolant systems are sealed systems. If you've got moisture and/or smell I would think you have a leak. The flush would not solve the problem. If the A/C is still blowing cold air then it's probably the coolant.
You'll probably want to check it sooner than later. I believe both systems use toxic chemicals. Also, if it is the coolant then the problem may get worse- to the point of you sitting on the side of the road somewhere with the hood up and steam/smoke spewing from the engine compartment.
The same place that can provide the flush service can probably provide a pressure test to determine if it's leaking.
A flush can run anywhere from 39.95 to 69.95 around here. You can buy a kit to do it yourself- it's really not to hard- but then you have to deal with disposing of the antifreeze.
good luck.

Reason: add more info
the heater core probably has a hole in it. as you move the temp toward cold, the air flow goes thru the cooling coil and less thru the heater core. as you raise the temp lever, more air goes thru the heater core and therefore pulls more of the coolant leak into the cab. check the radiator level.
if your in california an dont need the heater much, take the hoses off at the motor end and plug the motor ports. you can then change the heater core sometime in the future.
