I was unable to find anything on the tag by the front door so I crawled underneath and read the tag on the rear axle. I checked my numbers twice. It is as follows:
3 S 138 H
73 10 5 0A26
None of these numbers match the info given to get gear ratio.
I then did the tach test.
At 75 mph I am at roughly 2150 rpm. It looks like 4.10 gears. Am I right?
thats about what mine reads.. i think yoiu have a 3.73 or something such as that. that seems to tach a little low for the rpm's..but i could be wrong. anyway , i do not tow or 4 wheeel, so i like my lower rpm's , means more mpg
Thanks for the replies. After doing some more research I have to agree with you both. It must have 3.73 gears.
Thanks for the help and the info on this site.
Going by your RPM's at 75mph, I am pretty sure you have 3.73's. My 2000 has 4.30's and shows more like 2450 RPM at 75 mph.
The rear end tags don't have the same information they used to have, that is the ratio directly on the tag. However, my front diff tag does have the ratio on it. Have to get in underneath on the back side to see it. The door tag is the easiest way, but you need a cross reference from the code to the actual ratio.
From Alwaysfixin's post, here's the info: 73 10 5 0A26
Obviously, it's missing the first "3" of "3 73"... that first digit is hidden under a bolt. If he had a limited slip differential, it'd show "3L73". And the "10 5" indicates it has a 10.5" ring gear. Not much else one needs to know.
For your truck, the rear axle tag will look similar but have 4L30 10 5 xxxx. Again, the "4" may be hiddin by a bolt head.
