I would first test the fuel pressure. If it's low change out the fuel filter and test the pressure again. Don't forget to de-pressurize the fuel system before changing the filter. If the pressure is still low, it's probably the pump. There is only one pump I know of and it's in the tank. Just make sure you block underneath the tank so it is stable and will come down easy once you remove the hose, electrical plug and the retaining straps.
I had same problem with my 99 2.5L four. I went 200 miles stoped truck for a few hours and when I tried to restart it did the same thing. I did what you did and unplugged the maf and it ran fine, plug back in and no run. The Ford dealer was closed so I unplugged it and drove to the nearest auto zone. I bought a maf for $90 put it on and truck has ran fine since. This was in early July and about 4-5K miles ago.

i dont know if this helps at all, but when i was trouble shooting my ranger (94 4.0 4x4) i went to the junkyard and got a used one for 15 bucks. I still have it laying around, but i think they changed the style of connectors back in 1996. I was going to say you could just have it, but i dont think it would work. Otherwise do you have a junkyard in your area. I know my junkyard has some fairly descent taurases laying around with the 3.0 in then i'm sure i could get you a MAF for like 15$ if you wanted to try it.
Glad I could help steer you in the right direction. I notice others say get your sensor from a junkyard. I'm not so certain the junkyard is the best place to get a sensor from. The reason I say this is because you could run into the same problem with a used sensor at any time. My experience has taught me that a junkyard is a good place for parts, but not sensors. My advice, buy it new. that way you know your not going to have the same problem in 10,000 miles. Once glad to help you get your baby back on the road.
Hi guys I had the same exact problem on my 1998 ranger with the 3.0 I had went on vaction for 3 weeks and when I came back my truck wouldn't run it would barely stay running aroun 300 RPMs! I also cleaned the Mass air flow sensor with no luck either so I replaced it with a new one and it is running great now!!! I am positive that a new MAF will fix your problem!
