Posted the same question in the "Excursion forum", but I have found that those of us with 6.0L motors and that frequent this forum are a "closer knit" bunch of guys and seem to better "bond and understand" our needs, wants and desires...
What type or brand of brake controller do I need to consider?
I have an '03 Excursion and maybe buying a boat and will want the extra security of a brake controller/trailer brake set-up.
Is Prodigy a good brand... which model... and why?
What other brands or models should I consider and why? This is my first time looking into brake controllers... so I need a little education and insight as well... so all comments are welcome.
I like buying quality and knowing that it will last and treat me well... so lets try and only reccomend the "good stuff" please... not some "no-name brand" frfom the local auto-parts store unless I am being overly picky and snobbish??
I have had several over the last few years and I really like the tekonsha prodigy. It was and easy install using the supplied pig tail and I got it on line from ppl motorhomes in texas; I think it was $110 or $115 which at the time was a fantastic price and their service was good. It works great, it small and easy to use and less calibrating that it seemed I had to constantly do on other ones; even with the same trailer.
Most boat trailers have surge style brakes due to the fack that the axels are submerged everytime the boat is droped in the water or pulled out of the water. Have not seen or owned a boat trailer yet that had electric brakes. Would like to know which brake controller is the best. I plan on towning a 7'6" x 20' Trailer with a 12,000lb mini excavator on back of a 2004 F-450

Wow... never thought about that... makes sense though.... will have to look into this issue. Guess I have a "bad boy" diesel Excursion and its kind of plain with a controller... in case I ever needed or wanted to tow a large trailer.
When picking the model of brake controller, make sure you pay attention to the number of axles it will power, and match that to your towing needs. I've seen some that go by axle, and some that go by tire, so pay attention to that also.
Or, if you want an even better one than the Prodigy, you could just trade in that Excursion and get yourself a nice new Super Duty with the Tow Boss package and integrated brake controller. Come on Jeff, you know want to. . .
I was almost going to post about, to watch for electric over hydraulic brake systems, as they are not compatable with some brake controllers(Prodigy and Tow Command) included but the problem solved.
Moved, sorry Jeff you know this goes in the SD section, not the 6oh.
I know... it was fun while it lasted.
What do you use and why... or does your new truck have the "tow boss"... what did you use when you had your Excursion? Something tells me you have looked or tired them all!!!!
