got a BII with 302/C4, 33's, 3.73 gears, can't decide on gear ratio it has alot of acceleration but at 75mph it's turning 3,000 rpms, but i was told that I need 4.10 with 33's.
i dunno if you would really see much difference with 4.10's. you are already at 3.73's! what kind of driving/wheeling do you do?
you do realize that with higher (numerically) gears your RPM's will get higher. instead of pushing 3000 like you are now, with 4.10's (just as an example, i dont really know) you will be pushing something like 3600-3800 RPM's!
Like fish said, 4.10 would increase your RPMs on the hwy.
If you don't have any problems accelerating or trouble turning the tires, for the cost of regearing, just take it easy on the hwy, 65 mph is fast enough, and that way your rpms would be closer to 2,500 or so.
If you go to 3.50 gears you'd suffer take off(not much, b/c such a small difference), and RPMs wouldn't be much lower any way, (b/c small difference). Anything under that, you'd start looseing alot of acceleration and get horrible gas mileage getting up to 75 and the rpms wouldn't be low enough to compansate for the gas used to get to that speed with low rpms.
A aod or some kind of tranny with overdrive might be somthing to think about.
naw it's 4 wheel drive and I paid alot for the c4 to stock transfer case adapter. i would like a little more grunt in acceleration but i'm going to drive 750 miles in a few weeks and traveling about 80+ the whole time and i think turning that many rpms will wear the motor out quick plus horrible gas mileage.

3000rpms is not out of line for a cruise rpm for a 302, as long as it has a mid-range cam. i'd try to avoid runnnig it past that for gas mileage and wear&tear factor.
Well, if you want lower RPMs, then you have 2 options, one put a OD tranny in for the lower rpms, or drive slower. If you regear for more acceleration, your RPMs would be 4,000 at 80 mph.
Might want to consider a beater car that gets 30 + mpg, and drive that at 80 mph.
i wouldnt mess with the gears if i was u leave it alone.. and drive it ... 65 tops... that truck is not ment to be doing 80mph ... thats basicaly a toy.. i would get a beater car.. for that drive.. cuz i can gaurentee your gonna run into major problems.. doing that to the bII u put any lower gears in it.. ur gonna kick your self in the ***.. and as for 4:10... thats a lower gear.. if you were running .. 35's id understand.. if it was a truck doing like 60 tops.. but leave the truck the way it is and get a car
ive got 2500 in it now but i cant leave anything alone, the 2.73 rear and c6 helps keep the rpm dwn with the stock tires, it runs like a top and i drive it over 100 miles everday, up to 177000 miles, uses no oil
