99 Expy with 113,000 miles 2WD. When I drive slow (15-30 mph) you can hear a clunking underneath that speeds up when you do. It is related to speed as at a slow 10mph crawl the sound occurs at a slower rate than say at 25 mph. However it is not always there. Driving around tonight it was there especially in long right turns and starightaways. Seems to quiet down on left hand turns . However, it goes away with any pressure on the brakes. Like I said though, sometimes it is not there for a couple of days. It seems easier to find tonight.
Have gone through the old threads and see some possibilities. Unfortunately, I am supposed to leave Ontario here and drive to Philadelphia tomorrow to pick up a trailer.
If it goes away when applying pressure to the brakes, it is most likely brake related. Have your brakes been recently worked on? I'd pull the tires off and take a look at your calipers, brake pads, and rotors. Something may need your attention.
I have taken this to the shop in the past and they could ot find anything. They pulled the tires and lubed and did maintenance on the brakes but saw nothing. Something missed maybe? Shop does all my vehicles and I am very happy with them.
Check the caliper bolts. Once while changing my rotors I got distracted (wife was choking) and did not torque the lower caliper bolt. Car made a loud metal on metal "clunkling" noise that stopped when I applied the brake, although it made a different noise for a split second when the brake was applied. Upon inspection I found that the bolt had completely backed out.
I had a clunking sound that seemed to be coming from the front. It occured during load, originally at slower speeds when accelerating, and later at other speeds under less loads. It's rate was related to RPM, not MPH. Turned out to be the transfer case. I had 190,000 miles when it happened.
Got the fix guys. Took to my shop on Monday and the mechanic heard the clunking. Turns out that the right front brake pad spring stretched. The mechanic pushed it back to original shape and all works well. So the pad would rattle while the wheel spun but would tighten when the brakes were applied. Thanks to all.
