I am putting a 2 wheel drive cab on my 76 hiboy frame very soon .Has anybody had experiance with this and what is the best way to do it?Also wondering about a rear tank conversion for the hiboys.
I'm not sure of the specifics, the main difference is the 4x4 has a NARROWER frame than the 2WD by about 6". An earlier thread suggested welding "flanges" to the frame so the mounts will match. JC Whitney, and others have a tank for $$. OR you could get a boat tank - these things come in about any size/shape you can imagine. I'd suggest a skid plate under ANY tank you have if you go 4-wheelin'. A couple friends have fabbed plates out of 1/4" diamond plate w/ the smooth surface down.
the cab is a easy swap you have to drill the rear mount holes the fronts line up. As for rear tank they don't make one that fits, the frame is to narrow for any thing stock to work.
I've done the cab swap thing a few times and put the tank back in the cab. I use a spot weld cutter to remove the old mounting flanges use the stock mounting bolts and drill the back of the cab it's not that tuff as for the filler neck I've done this two different ways one is make a pattern off the old cab and put it on the new cab or just measure to the center of the hole mark it and use a hole saw both ways work
I did mine last year, the cab was easy, the holes you need to drill are evident from the bottom of the cab. The bed was a lot of work, redrilling all the holes and using spacers to get it aligned, different crossmembers on the bed itself.
I found a post in the 61-66 forum about using the in-cab tank in the bed, I did this temporarily until I get one that fits under the bed.
I did my '74 highboy a couple years ago [check out my gallery] I used a stock 19 gal tank turned sideways, then a 78 one ton cab [ it has the rear mounts in the same place as the highboy] ,I am going to a plastic 25.5 gal bronco tank in the under the bed site soon. I need the extra 6 1/2 gal. capacity. I had to cut the floor where the shifter goes through and put the stock plate in from the old cab.
If you are useing a cab from a 1/2 or 3/4 ton you will need to drill holes through the cab. personally I would look around for a 1 ton cab it only cost me $100 and I don't have any holes in my cab. Also aerotanks is said to make a tank that fits the highboys. I have yet to investigate it.
