i stand corrected...i just looked in my manual and a crew cab 8ft bed sits 1.8 inches higher in the 350 than the 250 but if you dont need it why buy it? for 1.8 inched that isnt even noticable?
OK. more 5.4 bashing.
the 5.4 is a good engine. but in my opinion, if i was going to be towing, or getting a F250 or F350, i would get the diesel engine for 1 simple reason. the 5.4 is a fuel hog. the diesel will pay for itself in the long run with fuel economy.
we have 8 5.4 expeditions. on average, they get 14-16 mpg.
we have at least 24 diesel F250, F350, F450, and F550 trucks 4 with 7.3's, the rest with 6.0's.
the 7.3's average 13 mpg, and the 6.0's average 20 mpg in the pickups, and the 6.0 service trucks average 15 mpg running an average weight of 20,000 lbs.
a friend of mine has an 04 F350 4X4 with the 5.4 auto trans and 4.10 gearing, and while it is a powerhouse, the best he can do is 12 mpg.
My buddy has the 5.4 in his F150 and won't pull his boat out of the water. I have to do it for him. His 5.4 is for sale and he is shopping right now for a 7.3.
i would go with the diesel. in my opinion, it will pay for itself in fuel savings over the life of the truck if you plan on keeping it for more than 5-6 years.
otherwise get the V10. but the V10 only gets around 12-14 mpg.
don't even bother with the 4.6, it is just enough for a full size, but can not tow anything.
and the 5.4 is marginal at best.
it is better to have to much engine than not enough.
if you do towing and dont want a diesel get the v10...ive seen alot of people with the 5.4...ive put 10,000 miles on my 5.4 and havent towed a thing...and i dont plan on it for the next 100,000 miles...when i get another truck i still wont get a diesel...my buddy has a 24' checkamte and he does fine with his f150 5.4...i think this is on of those thing...mine is bigger than yours...haha....get whatever you feel is right for you...the new 3v 5.4 has 300hp and 365 lbs/ft...and v10 is much higher so if you want the get it...get what you want but dont let people convince you that a diesel is better than anything because you have to get what is right for you...if i could go back i may have got a v10 but would i have needed it...no!...im happy with my 5.4 and thats all that matters so you need to go out and get what you want...i look at it like this...if the 5.4 was such a piece of ----- fill in the blank...haha....than they would be making it anymore...they went from the 7.3 to the 6.0 and now to the 6.4...i now nothing about diesels but why are they changing so much...o well just my .02

pay for itself in fuel savings...????....price for diesel here is 2.99 and gas is 2.41...the cost of maintenece on a diesel...my sister b/f changes his oil every 3000 like me but his cost him alot more because he changes his fuel filter evertime and he uses somewhere around 17 quarts...im not sure exactley how much...but i use a whopping 7 quarts...so my oil change cost me 18 dollars...and everything else on the diesel is more expensive...and not all of us can write our truck expenses off at the end of the year!
im not going to sit here and get into a gas vs diesel argument because that aint what this thread is about...my sister b/f 7.3 gets 16 mpg combined...city and highway...i get almost 14 in my gasser....if i towed alot of course i would suck it up and buy a diesel oe a 10 but this thread is about what FORDorCHEVY should get...now if he is dong a moderate amount of towing but not really heavy and not that often...of course the v10 wold be the right decision unless he wants the nice sound and longevity...but even if a diesel would out last a gasser...i probably aint keeping the truck past 200,000 any ways and if properly maintained there isnt no reason my 5.4 wouldnt make that...so lets keep this thread to what it is...FORDorCHEVY get what you want...the logical decision would be a v10 but you wont get great mpg but you said you where only using it 2-3 times a week and you where only pulliong a few quads...dont listen to what everyone has to say just look at the facts about the truck..
