I have been looking at intakes for my 06 4.2 and until resently nothing. I did find that AIRAID has a new air dam for my truck. It also goes on the 4.6's. Currently I have a K&N filter with the stock intake. I am wonder if the air dam makes a difference or not? Also If an antire 4.6 intake would possibly fit?
depends on your MAF. if you have a Slot in MAF, then there probably arent any intakes out there for you. if you have a regular MAF in a housing, maybe a 4.6 intake would fit, but id have to look at some pictures of your engine
the newer 4.6 engines (05-up) use a different mass air meter, its just a sensor that slides into a housing. The 04 style is the older style blow through MAF with the 4 bolt flange. The only intake on the market now for the 4.6 is the with the older style MAF, and from the direction ford has gone with the meters on these trucks, id be willing you bet you have a slot in style maf, meaning it probably wont work for you.
I wasn't aware that the 4.6 used the new sesor. If I am correct I do believe it is now kinda like a pug into the intake box. Airaid has this air dam and it says it fits 04-06 4.6 and 05-06 4.2, so I am wondering if it really fit and if it really has any gain over a stock intake with a K&N filter. I am planning on getting a functional ram air hood and if the picture is correct than it should seal to the hood.
AIRAID is actually pretty ingenious when it comes to this particular intake design. They have completely bypassed the whole MAF issue by using the stock MAF housing in both applications.
The intakes for the 4.6 comes in 2 different parts, the modular intake tube, and the filter/shield assembly.
The filter/shield assebly will also work on the 4.2 because it using the same stock air box as the 4.6.
The modular intake tube will NOT work on the 4.2 because the location of the TB on the 4.2 appears to be farther towards the front of the truck. You may be able to modify the tube for a 4.6 to fit on a 4.2 by cutting it shorter, but I couldnt say that for sure unless i tried it myself.
Im adding all the parts to the store now, after I nail down the pricing, you can find them here!
So on the 4.2 I would reuse the tube and half of the shield. On my truck the shield is a big cone shape that is two pieces clamped together. The sensor plugs into the half that is closest to the tube. I am guessing the airaid shield and filter replaces the other half that is closest to the fender. Would the new shield help at all with power or is it the same as a drop in filter? Would it work with a ram air hood?
Youve got it! On the 4.2 you will retain the factory tube and the half of the box that is attatched to the tube. You should get a noticeable boost in power, and a little more sound out of the intake. As far as the hood goes, it all depends how the hood is designed. With the AIRAID like that, it will draw air from the fender and behind the headlight, im not sure where the hood would want to let air in but you may need to make some modifications to the heat shield.
I'v been looking at this good hood. The inlet to the hood is in that general area. There is only a kit for the 5.4 wich is alot different than the 4.2.
On the airaid it has a little weather strip along the top which indicates to me to me an open top. If the picture I got off airaid is correct of cource. What about K&N vs. AIRAID filters? I already have a K&N.

The rubber along the top is to seal against the OEM hood. Which means it may seal to the underside of the ram air hood too, the question is, what does the underside of that hood look like? Where does the air come out under the hood? it may come out somewhere that is sealed off by the AIRAID shield, so we will have to do a little more research on that hood, either find a pic of the underside of the hood, or see if you can find a pic of the intake that is supposed to work with the hood.
It does seal against the hood, but there are gaps on both side of the shield. I have threatened to seal it up on both sides...I'm just too lazy right now!! Outside air comes in mainly from a 3" hole in the fenderwell that lines up with the front of the filter...where the stock air tube goes.
