My Gf's car has a bit of a fuse addiction. She blew a fuse for the horn/cigerette lighter/amp for stock radio. I went to replace it and everytime I put a fuse in it pops instantly. It says in the manual its a 10amp fuse, but its drawing alot more power then that. My guess is a short somewhere, but I am not sure. It started when she plugged her car charger into the cigerette lighter and has not worked since. Any ideas?
Unplug the cig lighter and put in another fuse. If it doesnt blow the fuse, replace the cig lighter to see if that helps. Probably can get one for little of nothing at a salvage yard.
hook up a test light in place of the fuse. It should light up because of the short. While it is in place, disconnect componants that are fed by the fuse one at a time. If the light goes out, you have identified the offending componant. If it does not go out you will have to trace the wires individually.
I'll bet the problem is in the lighter or the lighter socket itself. Would not be the first time I've seen these fail. You can also unplug the wire from the back of the lighter to determine if the lighter is at fault. Using an ammeter in place of the fuse will be of benefit to your finding the problem.
Thnx Ill do that next time I go see her. I think I can borrow a altimeter from work. I am pretty sure its the cig lighter, but just wanted a few more ideas.
