OK, I have spent the last 5 days researching the threads for information and have read many opinions on engine choices for our classic trucks. From stock to Jowilkers favorite SBC (hee hee).
Now, I know most of us are die hard fans of the big blocks, but I wanted to hear some pro's and cons's of installing a late model 5.0 TBI and automatic trans in a 61-64 truck. I haven't read here that it's been done yet and wanted a discussion on which vehicle would be the best donor, and what clearances would be needed as far as exhaust and stuff.
I am NOT currently doing this install but would consider it in the next couple of years.

K, What do you want from your truck? How do you plan to use it?
I do not like an I6 at all for nothing, so a V8 is all that I would use. The 302 will do most jobs as long as you are patient. If you are in a hurry like myself you want more then you have more choices. The 351W is a newer generation engine with a few more options and a good engine. The Ford Edsel is period correct, and the 390 is just one of the best engines that Ford ever built.
IMHO of course.

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
I would consider a fuel injected motor nice, but what a hassle to install! All that wiring, and modifying the fuel tank and fuel lines, what emissions to leave off, what to leave on etc.

I kind of thought the same thing at first but the more I think about it, in todays fuel market, would it really be too much of a hassle? I think a good donor car like a full size sedan or upper level cruiser would be great for a modest V-8 with better fuel economy. Mechanically, If you can install a V-8 with relative ease, then almost any year model could be used, right?
I don't want a stump puller but If I want to drop the hammer every once in a while, I'd like to hear a little screaming from the rear rubber. However, For the daily driving, I'd like to get a little better than 12mpg. My 292 is tired and I don't want to spend 2 grand rebuilding it.
Keep the thoughts comming...

I'm putting a302 in my 61 unibody. I considered going the injected route too. But now time is of the essance. If I were to put an injected motor in I would go with ported and not TBI. The only difference is 8 injector wires instead of 2. Other than that all the other stuff is going to be installed the same. The port injected motor will be more efficient. This does not necessaraly mean better mileage though. It'll still beat the hell out of the 292. Good luck, Rich.
we are putting a fuel injected 5.0 liter in my son's 62 Unibody. We got a wiring harness from Ford Motorsports to make it live. It really doesn't look that much different from the stock donor harness that came with the engine and transmission. Buddies of mine have this engine in 53-56's and get 22-26 MPG all day long. Plus they have a lot more power than my carborated 302.
I'm putting a 5.0L w/E4OD trans from a 1998 Explorer in my '65. It seem to be a little more complicated than the older 5.0L's. I'm useing this because it's a very low mileage engine. I got tired of "feeding' my 351W. I like to drive my truck and wanted good mileage and some power too. If you get the EVTM manual for the donor car and get your head in it a little, it's not really that complicated. In my opinion the gas mileage and dependability are worth it if you drive the truck much.
hi, my sugestion would be go with a 5.0 from a ealy 90's mustang. get the harness with it. or get the whole car. a little work hooking up but worth the driveabilty and fuel economy. they have great power also. good luck with your project...dan AKA fordmandan
