Hi Ihave a 94 Ranger. I have had an intermitant starting problem for the past year or so. 2.3 engine turns over but does not start. I popped the clutch and it did start. Before that I sprayed a little starting fluid in the hose that goes from the air filter to the air intake and it did cough but did not start. I pulled the fuel pump relay and it started right up, however I shut it off and tried to start it again and no start same condition. This time I noticed that my check engine light did not come on when I turned the key to the on position. Anyhow it only starts when the check engine light comes on while the key is in the on position. When I say on position I do not mean the cranking position. Does this sound like a fuel relay problem? Any help would be appreciated. One other thing I should mention seems like if I let it cool off that it will start. Coincidental I don't know. Once again any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob
Just for the sake of it, take off your negative battery connection first - but remove your positive cable and clean the battery post and the inside of the connector right back to shiny metal and coat them with vaseline when you re-assemble them.
By doing this, you will eliminate a cause of more grief than I can detail here. It is a good way to begin...
If you could tell us how you diagnosed it to be the EEC relay that would be helpful. Did you get a tip it could be that or was it something you found out by troubleshooting.
Hi again, I called a mechanic friend who he told me to flick the EEC relay with my finger and see if it starts. Thats what I did and it started right up. He claims that it is a common problem w/ Rangers, relays stick I called him a few days after I posted here. It has been over a month since I replaced it. So far I have had no starting problems. Easy fix, plug in a new one. What convinced my mechcanic friend that that was the problem was the fact that when I turned the ignition switch to the on position and could not hear the fuel pump turn on meant that the EEC relay was not allowing the fuel pump to come on because it was stuck. Are there contacts inside the relay? Another indication in his opinion was that the check engine light did not come on as the fuel pump sound could not be heard. Seeya, Bob
Thanks for the detailed post-it provides us something else to watch for, especially helpful since it is a problem that occurs upstream of the MIL. I'm going to locate that relay just so I'll know where it is in the future.
