I got to this one a little late, but I have noticed the same thing with the motorcraft batteries on my last two rangers, they lasted a little over 5 years. I just replaced the battery out of my present 2001, but not because it was dead, the posative post was leaking a little, I let it go for a few months waiting for it to die, it never did, was going on a long trip and just replaced it to be safe. Bob I got the same battery you did, more by dumb luck than anything on my part, my 93' used to eat the walmart batteries up every couple of years and I wasn't willing to try them again.
