I have a 2002 F250 Superduty 4x4 with a V-10 and and a 6-speed manual
trans. I have a scraping noise in between the engine and trans that is real
loud when cold. I also hear it breifly at certain RPMs under acceleration when
warmed up. It will go away if I pry against the thin steel plate between the engine and trans towards the trans, and get worse if I pry towards the engine. I removed a couple of bolts and looked in side at the flywheel and saw nothing wrong. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and how they fixed it! The truck has less than 19k miles on it and is still under warranty until Jan 2007 and if it's major I will take it to the dealer, but I hate any one touching my truck besides me!

Sorry I can't help more with the scraping noise, but wow, that is low mileage for a 2002!!! Might be rust from sitting there so long without being moved.
But good luck, maybe someone here has/had a simliar problem.
I bought the truck new as a leftover on Jan 31 2004.The warranty does not start until the vehicle is first registered. I live close to my job and drive the truck almost evey day (just not very far). I use it mostly to plow snow, haul scrap
metal, and tow a car trailer with junk cars that are also loaded with metal and the truck performs awesome! This is the very first problem I have had. Even though the truck sat 18 months before purchase it had no rust due to all the protective coatings they put on new vehicles.
Hi there, interesting problem, but I disagree with the approach. Dealerships aren't always able to effect repairs on the first try even when they are competent, and sometimes of course they aren't! I'd take it in soon and hope 4 months is enough time to get it fixed and then evaluate the results.
Check your trans bellhousing bolts. I did a clutch on an 89, a few weeks later I had a similar noise. The top two (most difficult to reach) bolts had vibrated loose, I guess I didn't tighten them enough the first time. The people building our trucks are only being paid $80 an hour, don't expect them to check every little bolt before they move on to the next one.
If forgot to say the problem. Because the top bolts were loose, the fly wheel could rub against the dust shield or something else in the bell housing.
Good idea ReAX. I throw it on the lift at work tomorrow and check all the bell housing bolts. I am afraid of dealer because I worked at a ford dealer for two years and saw the affects of flat rate pay (especially under warrranty) first hand! I left because of the STRESS that type of pay puts on you and how it makes some (not all!) techs work on vehicles. I am hourly now although I dont't make the same money I sleep much better at night!
Your problem is the the spacer plate between the bell housing and engine block.
It is a thin piece of sheet metal and it has warped from heat and is now scraping the back of the flywheel
I had the same problem under warranty, fixed by a new version or rengineered part.
it has a few rolled beads put in it to keep it from warping.
Take it in they will have to pull the tranny .

Yes Forty Fords you are right. I finally had a chance to work on it and it's bent.
I put washers in between the spacer plate and the lower two bolts, and the noise is gone. I should probably get it fixed right before the warranty runs out, but I really don't want anybody else to touch it!
